Hey, I'm thinking about going the SBS route on my 870, and I'm wondering, am I tied to that barrel that I plan to cut down? Or can I swap out for an 18.5" or more for hunting?

Also, I know something has to be engraved with a serial number, but where? On the gun? Or is it in the barrel?

The receiver should be engraved.

You can swap to a longer barrel. There is an ATF letter that describes this in the SBR case.
