Cool find at the LGS
Today as I was browsing around the local gun shop with my buddy I spotted this little Norinco SKS-M standing in the used gun rack for $400 seemingly in unfired condition. This little rascal has the 16" paratrooper barrel and takes AK-47 mags. You don't see these every day, so I talked the store owner down to $325 and walked out with it. It came with 2 30 round mags, 1 5 round mag, and the Chinese sling. I'll go shoot it in the morning and make sure she runs alright, I'm sure she will. I always wanted one of these little boogers, but they're like finding hens teeth around here. One more communist in the safe tonight.
The best part is someone else cleaned the cosmoline out of it.
Here it is (Don't mind the dirty carpet, it's my reloading room)
Here it is with my bubba'd Norinco/26\

I don't know... The s/n is in the 4500s and it was imported in 93.

Pretty neat find
I have a minty 1950 Russian SKS with the spring loaded firing pin, but I wouldn't mind getting a SKS M/D so it could share mags with my Yugo UF.

Definitely cool.
I want to find the one with the thumbhole stock and blocky handguard. Call me crazy but I do dig that look. Not to mention that it doesn't look "evil".
Also just keep in mind that in order to slap in a fully loaded mag, you'd have to pull back the charging handle and hold it to the rear. Slap in the mag and release the charging handle to chamber a round. Otherwise the mag won't seat if you just try to put the mag in without the charging handle pulled to the rear.
With just a hair of practice, it ain't bad at all. Gun goes "click", you pull back the charging handle and brace the gun against your shoulder or side. Take out old mag, slap in new mag, release charging handle and go back to business at hand.

My dad has a new in the box thumb hole version.
I got to shoot it today and my loaded mags seat just fine on a closed bolt. Maybe mine's an exception to the rule. It shot really good. I killed a lot of beer cans and got several 2-3" groups at a stepped off 100yds. I like this SKS better than any other one I've shot.

Maybe the thumbhole version got a modified mag well, but this version of yours and mine definitely require the charging handle to be pulled back before the loaded mag would seat. Others with the same rifle had reported the same thing.

No my new one takes fully loaded 30 round mags with the bolt closed too.
Now when I went with the Tapco mags in my standard sks, I had to modify the bolt to allow it to clear the feedlips. But this m takes loaded mags with a closed bolt, no problem.

Great find and price!!
I bought mine back in the early 90s for $90.00 at a gun show, I wished I had the money back then to buy 10.

Isn't that the truth. I have 3 SKS that were bought in the 90s for ~$70. Wish I had bought more.

I'm happy for you for making this wise decision, leaves more junk for me to buy. I am well aware of how much they cost back in the day but this gun was a good buy from an investment standpoint. They will only keep going up. I appreciate these old clunkers for what they are and they make a pretty good hog gun.
