Should I buy a new Colt Single Action Army?
I put on layaway a gorgeous new 4 3/4" bbl Colt SAA at my local gun shop. I've always wanted one in 4 3/4", the price is decent, and I finally have a few spare bucks.
Wife is not happy but my pappy told me that's a woman's job is to be unhappy with her husband's spending and drinking habits.
I really want this gun and can't get it off my mind. Pull the trigger!? Please help.

If we look at prices of SAAs over the years and this trend continues, my guess is that in a decade or three whatever you paid for it will seem comparatively a bargain.
As far as the spousal issue, I am presuming that regular household bills are current and there is at least a slight cushion to deal with the unexpected.

I wouldn't mind a Colt SAA.
I also like the Ruger Vaquero.
But I'm currently hoping for a Smith and Wesson double action revolver .22LR. So it will be a loooooooooooooong time before my wife ever lets me get a Colt SAA.
But I do have this little .22LR

Jump on it and don't look back. Maybe let her shoot it with light loads while she is wearing her cowgirl boots and hat. She'll be won over for sure.

There you go!
Get her a sexy little cowgirl outfit, complete with a belt and holster,
to wear while she's shooting your new Colt.
She can even wear it later tonight, if you know what I mean.
You just might find yourself buying a lot of Colt SAA's.

I always thought 45 Colt or another cartridge as old as the original design was the way to go for a SAA.

I would get one in .357 Mag so that I can shoot the .38 Special.

I don't think you can get the Colt SAA in 44 mag although they are made in .44 special. I have 2 2nd Gen Colts in .357. One of them is the 4 3/4 bbl and is in the stagecoach box. Yeah, Baby. Also have a 3rd in the .44 special along with several 1st Gen cowboy guns. Fun stuff. I shoot them all.

I have been tempted by the siren call of a Colt SAA, (in 45 Colt of course) on a number of occasions.
Lord willing, one day, I will sucumb.

I think they made a few. But... I also think they are scarcer than hens teeth. There was also a lot of custom copies made, not by Colt, in 44 mag plus there are some conversions out there. But overall your right. It was not something normal in Colts production.

So what are they going for these days? I know you use to pick em' up for around $1200 but I'm so out of touch with gun prices it's not even funny.
My first centerfire handgun was an EMF SAA clone in 357Mag. They're a lot heavier then the larger bore counterparts. Personally I'd rather have one in 45Colt and I'd think that the old 38/40 would be pretty cool to play around with especially if you already have a 40S&W you're loading for. Same bullet dia.(.401") so you could cast one bullet for both ctgs.
Nice thing about the SAA in 45Colt is the holes are bigger so it's easier to unload, when you start stabbin' that ejector into holes the 357's can be downright hard to find when you're in a hurry.
I wouldn't mind getting back into a single action someday but I think I'd go Ruger so I can load it with Six and get it in 45Colt/45ACP so I can use the same ammo as I'm using in my 1911. Of course the EMF Hartford models are pretty nice too and are probably half or less the price of an actual Colt. Also, remember, once you shoot that Colt or even cock the hammer back you lose a lot of the collector's value so if you want a shooter you might give a clone a closer look. The higher quality ones are cheaper and built just as good IMHO and you won't take a big loss from shooting it like you will a Genuine Colt.

A standard SAA will not hold up to the 44mag.

That makes sense, but there is something nostalgic about Colt SAAs. I'd want the cartridge to be as old as the original 1873 design.
I like 45 Colt or 44-40.

SAA 45 Colt
To me the Colt SAA and 1911 are the two guns that represent America's best. I have a pair of Colt SAA clones from USFA with consecutive serial numbers customized by Doug Turnbull.
