Who has loaded 9mm +P with WSF?

I keep seeing recommendations for a 124gr +P load using 6.2gr WSF, but I have never seen anyone say they have actually loaded & shot it. I want to work up a duplicate load for my 124gr +P SD ammo, with range brass & 124gr PD JHP's. From what I've read, there's no difference between regular & +P brass, so do I need to use any particular brass? How many times can I safely reload these? Is there anything else I need to worry about?

Ofcourse, I'll work up slow & pay attention to excess pressure signs. I'll also chrono my loads on the way up.

6.2gr of WSF is certainly going to be into +P range. Safe, depends on your gun, OAL, brass, primer & bullet. Loading over max, everything matters. So take any load recommendations w/ a grain of salt. You have to work them up in your gun, use a chronograph & know how to read & watch for pressure signs passing 5.8gr.

I've used the load plenty over the years. The particulars:

Random case
Random SP primer
6.2grs. WSF
115/124gr. jacketed bullet
1.150" OAL

The single most accurate 9mm +P load I've ever worked with regardless of the gun. Can't say how long brass will last as I use mine in the field and let them fly. First saw the load data here years ago, can't remember who suggested it. Nothing out of the ordinary (save the accuracy), just a good, solid HOT reload.

+P load

i could not get top velocity with wsf in 9mm. if you want +P velocity go with power pistol. i ran speer 124 gd +P through crono & power pistol matches with max load.

Thanks tj. I normally load my PD 124gr JHP's @ 1.125" OAL, so do you think I'll reach the same velocity at a lower charge? Or should I just try to load them as long as my GEN 4 G17 will reliably feed? The PD JHP's have a narrow profile, like the XTP's, so I bet they could be loaded a little longer.

HS6 is another one. Go to Brian Enos forums and look at the 9mm Major Data. I don't think I would do it for my gun but if your in the mood, it might help make your life more interesting.

Load as long as your gun and mags will allow. Only time I went over published data in WSF was when I went to 6.0gr for a 115gr FMJ at 1.150". Didn't chrono it but they shot find and there was no visible pressure sign. I shot 50rds of that load.

I've seen a lot of 9 Major data with HS6, but I'm with you on not putting those loads through my gun (stock GEN 4 G17). I have a 4# jug of WSF that I use in 9, 40 & 45. I'm just looking for about 1200fps with a 124gr JHP. Those 9 Major loads spit the same pills at around 1350fps. I don't shoot in Open class, so I have no need for that kind of velocity.

Missing the point. Take the 9mm Major data and download it.

Whats the point? There are plenty of non +p loads with wsf that are already more accurate than a pistol shooter can take advantage of.

That's certainly one approach. I'd rather work up from published data for stock guns, than work down from data from comp'd open guns. I'd probably end up at the same point either way though. I wasn't trying to argue with you.

That and I only have WSF, and I haven't seen any 9 major data for it (not that I've looked for it).

I want a load that has the same bullet weight/velocity/recoil impulse as my 124gr +P Ranger T SD ammo. I'd like to be able to practice with something similar to what my mags are loaded with.

Just wasn't sure if you got my point. If people are using HS6 at much higher pressure/loadings then what you need, you could argue it's a reasonable choice because it should be more forgiving at those "over max" pressures. You want a linear powder.

Either way, like you said, work it up from the bottom, not down from the top. I wouldn't even think of it with out a chrono.

You can get +P velocities, while still staying within standard pressure ranges, but you'll have to pick a powder that caters to such things. Five powders that I can recommend for this purpose:

Alliant Power Pistol
Vihtavuori 3N37
Vihtavuori 3N38
Vihtavuori N350
Hodgdon HS-6

You are looking for 1200fps, easily done w/ several powders & you may not even get to +P pressures w/some as noted, but hard to tell w/o pressure equip. IMO, you don't need to go much above 5.9gr to get 1200fps. I agree, w/o a chronograph, you are just making a WAG.

Ok thanks guys. I'm going off of Hodgdon's listed max of 5.3gr, which is under max SAAMI pressure, so you're probably right. Also, like I said in my original post, I will absolutely be using my chrono as I work up this load. WSF is all I have for that kind of load, and it should get there no problem, so that's what I'm using. I also load my 9 minor, 40 major & 45 major with it, and I love this powder so far. Great accuracy throughout several load developments, and I like the recoil impulse over WST & TG.

Nearly all of the load data I've seen with WSF has been the same as the load data directly from Winchester. It is a bit on the mild side. I have loaded 9 mm with WSF and gone a half grain above the maximum load data listed by Winchester for a +P effect. I didn't have any pressure signs. There may be other WSF load data but it sure isn't common. Sometimes Speer will have some warm handgun load data. I load 124 grain Gold Dots to 1.120". If 5.3 grains is the listed max I think working towards one grain over that doesn't seem like too much with a good pistol and good components.

I find WSF a very tiny bit slower than Unique in every caliner I have treid it in. SPeer lsits 5.8gr of Unique as max for the 124gr GDHP. I have run that, makes 1200fps in a G17/LW bbl. At 5.9gr of WSF, I get the same vel, so a bit slower & no pressure signs. Both Hodgdon & Speer pressure test so I can only conclude the test platform for Hodgdon is a lot diff than Speer's.
