Is it ok to use Small rifle primers in 9mm??
Hey everyone, I got rid of my rifle and have 1k small rifle primers left over. I'd rather not take a hit selling these primers to buy pistol primers.
I have done some searches online, but I want to hear from those who have done this and what your experience was. Please no speculation or hearsay, just experiences.
Thanks!

I know guys that do it for 9mm major, but I am old school; use the correct primer for the task. Rifle primers are hotter also harder. Trade them to someone loading 223 or just hang on to them. I took a 10yr layoff loading small rifle stuff, glad I never sold the primers.

Bottom line, I wouldn't do it. Various combinations caused more or less breech damage.

I have a friend who did it. His **** always breaks and never runs. Mostly shoots a 1911 and another steel gun. I am sure a Glock could handle it.
Seriously,
He does. Never a issue, but I wouldn't do it.

If you work the load up and don't just substitute then yes. I have a friend that doesn't buy SPP any more he only buy's SRP for rifle and pistol.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna go the road taken on this one. I'm just gonna sell those primers. No need to damage some of my prized possessions over a few buck...
Thanks for the advice and info.

For 1K SR primers, I'd use them with heavy loads.
Those that use them with heavy loads, myself included for 9mm Major, have no issue with breech cutting. Reason the OP in the other thread was getting breech cutting was the load wan't heavy enough to seal the primer pocket and gas leaked.
If you don't seal the gas, you will get cutting, be it breech or in the form of leading with cast bullets.

Rifle primers have a thicker cup then pistol primers so they're normally just a bit longer then pistol primers. That means that when you seat them they'll stick out a bit which can be a dangerous condition, primers should be flush or just a bit below flush so they won't contact anything unintentionally. I'd say NO, you can't use a rifle primer in a handgun round, not unless you cut the primer pocket deeper to allow the rifle primer to be fully seated.

What variety of self-respecting 1911 shooter would be using small primers?

Ah, could those possibly include STI 9mm's along with a variety of other makes.
And before you continue with your 9mm is an under-power sissy round please not that experienced combat shooters are well versed in overcoming this urban myth.
One of two methods are traditionally employed when engaging an adversary while armed with a 9mm.
1) Simply shoot the adversary enough times that the sheer weight of the lead keeps him from chasing after you.
2) Again, shoot the adversary enough times that the combined bullets momentum causes the aggressor to stumble back into a waterway where the accumulated weight of the shots leads to his death by drowning. (Since you can't swing a dead cat in Florida without hitting a canal or man-made lake this is the preferred method in the land of foreigners and mosquitoes.
You flatlanders just don't understand effective combat techniques.

And that's why the 1911 only holds 7+1. That's all they need! It's only the plastic 9mm's that have to have 17 rounds to get the job done. And the 40 Short & Wimpy...

True for large rifle/pistol primers. Not true for the small rifle/pistol primers.
For higher pressure pistol ammo I have no problem at all subbing rifle for pistol primers. In fact I loaded about 5,000 rounds of 9x19 and 40 S&W a couple weekends ago with small rifle primers.
In 45 GAP it is a toss-up. In 38 Special, always small pistol as my 686 and 627 has a very light trigger and it wont light off rifle primers 100% of the time.

Except for artillerymen no one else shoots a gun that's actually bigger than them.
Instead of limp wristing Hozer has perfected the technique of limp body.

Wait, I've got one.
Use your imagination to figure out what I did with that shotgun 30 minutes before that crime scene photo was shot.
Gaming is for sissies.
