Advise me O wise ones on buying a new assault rifle?

Ok, so I'm looking to buy a new assault rifle.

Firstly, I want something with low recoil, something i'll be able to adapt with a red dot or other optic. I may be hunting small game with it and taking it out shooting, but I also want this to be SHTF rifle.

I may even go with something as small as 9mm. I want the cartridge to be readily available and cheap so I can stockpile ammo cheaply.

I've never bought an assault rifle, so I definitely need some help.
Any advice is appreciated, or if you could point me in the direction of some good sites that'd be great.

Thanks!

You can't go wrong with the Smith and Wesson M&P Sport. Lots of reviews here.

There, fixed your post for you.

The M&P Sport is a good place to start as stated in the post above.

What, exactly, is your budget? No point in suggesting the Sport if your budget would allow for something better, like a standard M&P, PSA, or BCM rifle.

Also, you are not buying an assault rifle, unless you plan on dropping $15,000 for the group therapy option.

Budget, price range and does your budget include rifle, ammo, accessories, etc all in one or are you just looking for a cheap body/frame and add some stuff to later.

Also, are you looking to buy a complete rifle or assemble it yourself?

What do you already have? That info would definitely help people to recommend new ones.

I'm just going to assume you already have a .223 AR-style rifle and/or an AK. If you're going to hunt, then the AK is probably not accurate enough and the AR is probably not powerful enough, so those options are gone. (Unless you want an AR chambered for 7.62x39, which I've found is a highly enjoyable configuration! *BUT* AR's tend to get dirty and become fairly high-maintenance under adverse conditions. At least to me, but then again I've always been pretty anal about weapon cleanliness.)

OR... you could just buy an FAL! I'm in the same boat with you and I've just about made up my mind.
1- If you have a heavy(-ish) gun like that, recoil will be naturally dampened.
2- It's a big fat baby. It'll eat anything you feed it.
3- It's a very accurate rifle.
4- It comes with a naturally low comb, so mounting a scope for hunting means you will all but totally abandon the whole concept of cheek-weld. The solution? Reflex sights! I love the Burris FastFire II - good price, excellent warranty, very sturdy, and the 2 MOA dot is sufficient for day or night shooting and works fine for shots out to about 300yds before holdover becomes an issue. (Holdovers with red dots are an art form and I don't recommend setting yourself up for them.)
5- A quality FAL, plus a mount and a FF, sling etc, plus a case and ~10 mags, I would expect those things to put you out by about $2000. Maybe it sounds pricey, but it's entirely feasible that a rifle like that could do anything you need it to, and we all know what they say about The Man With One Gun....
5- Final and perhaps most significant reason: zombies are allergic to FALs!

For the common owner and first time rifle owner it's hard to beat an AR style rifle the m&p sport is a great starter I recommend something from colt hard to beat a good colt

AR is like Legos you build and add and subtract until youre happy. Low recoil lightweight and good Roy's overall in 556/223.

I’m going to recommend a 16" barreled flat top AR from a reputable company, in 5.56mm
I recommend you take about a month and research this. Read all the relevant threads here and on other forums. Google M4 comparison chart by Rob S and look at the features listed. When you have an understanding of what those features are and how they will or will not affect your use requirements, then you can make an informed decision.

Absolutely solid advice here. It's hard to understand suggestions people make (and why they may or may not make sense for the OP's wants and needs) without a basic understanding of AR components, etc.

If you want cheap ammunition, I think you are out of luck. If you want ammunition cheaper, then you need to start thinking about reloading.

Reloading will open many doors for different calibers and allow you to keep hard to find ammunition on hand if needed.

You don't need to buy the most expensive Press either. You can start off with a single stage Press and work yourself up to a Progressive Press later.

Colt 6920. Great gun with solid reputation and history. Apparently, you can even find them at some Wal-Marts for under $1,000.

Oh that ALWAYS bugs me when the media refers to someone owning an 'AK-47'.

I wish we could just call them assault rifles. I know if I ever ended up in court after using one I would be correcting my prosecutor by calling it a "sporting rifle" just because it sounds nicer, but I wish we didn't have to be so political with our gun terms. After all, isn't that what AR stands for? Maybe not? And if I want to group AKs, ARs, ACRs, and SCARs, I hate having to say "sporting rifles" because that adds 10/22s and 700s to the group, which is not my intention.

Anyway, just venting really. I know it is what it is, and we are particular about our terms so anti-gunners don't use our terms against us... I just want to live in a world where I can say "assault rifle" and it's not a bad thing unless I say "criminal with an assault rifle"

AR is short for Armalite.

Assault rifles are full auto by definition, so an AR-15 isn't an assault rifle.

FYI - Althought the terminology "assault rifle" has existed for decades to describe fully automatic military style rifles, the resurgence of the term was done so by anti-gunners to heighten the public fear factor (and gain anti-gun supporters).

For that reason alone = I hate the use of that term, because it supports anti-gun agenda. IMHO - it is not a pro-gunner term and thus is not "our" term when describing military type semi auto rifles. If anything, its closer to a "defensive" weapon (than an assault weapon).

Why not call them "tactical" rifles? That seems to refer to the military-style weapons without also including the 700's, 10/22's, etc.

Absolutely! Plus you'll have the extra cash to accessorize and buy extra ammo. This is a good quality rifle for the price. It stands right up there with my Colt LE6920.
