Carry During Alaska Trip
We will be spending a couple of weeks in Alaska this summer, wonder about carry as we travel around (I have FL permit and LEOSA retired):
Fly to Anchorage from Chicago-
No problem, I've checked my piece on the airlines many times while traveling.
"Alaska Railroad" from Anchorage to Seward-
If that's Amtrak, the recent procedure to check your luggage with a gun still sounds like a major PITA. If not Amtrak, not sure what the regs would be for an in-state train.
Boat tour of Kenai Fjords-
Recent local boat tour in Florida had a sign about Coast Guard screening, but nothing actually happened. Attitudes in Alaska may be different...
Motorcoach from Seward to Anchorage-
An in-state bus trip.
"McK Explorer Dome Rail" train to Denali-
Again, not sure if this is Amtrak.
Stay at "McKinley Chalets/Denali Lodges"-
If they are Park Service employee buildings, then I have to store the gun while inside. Otherwise, local regs only?
Bus tours of Denali-
An in-state bus and not a Park Service Building, should be ok except for possible local regs.
"McK Explorer Dome Rail" again, this time to Fairbanks-
Same as before.
"Alaska Riverways/Riverboat Discovery" near Fairbanks-
Another boat ride, USCG issues?
Fly to Anchorage and back to Chicago-
Shouldn't be a problem with checking.
So, what do you Alaska folks know about the issues I'll have if carrying on this trip?
Thanks!

I was in Alaska last summer and its a very gun friendly state. You need to look out for federal buildings in the park. Are you carrying for 2 legged or 4 legged threats? I carried a S&W 500 as I was concerned about bears (I was doing some hiking / fishing).

We are a MUST INFORM state. Alaska Railroad is NOT Amtrak. You could give them a call. Carrying here isn't a big deal, but expect trouble if you fail to inform any Coppers that you are packing heat.

Boat trip could be a problem. Certain size/class of vessels could run afoul of fed law, which would apply to regular folks with ccws, not sure if it would also prohibit ex LEO who qualifies under LEOSA.

Website for Alaska Railroad says no concealed firearms in stations or on trains. Guns must be unloaded, in a locking hard sided case, and bolt removed or trigger lock installed. Sounds similar to an airline, an inconvenience but not the total PITA of Amtrak.
I've never been stopped by anybody while carrying, but it would always be prudent to advise an officer if carrying. Thanks for the hints.

Any restictions would probably apply to me, since LEOSA only exempts me from state restrictions. Still gotta follow Fed rules.
I'll have to research this one more.

Call the Coast Guard and tell them the ship... I had called a couple of the local sheriffs' marine division, and got a green light to carry. I thought that made sense, and the marine division would know the rules of that particular road. Still, it was a river cruise in Detroit river, so I was still concerned if the boat went into Canadian waters if I'd be in trouble. So kept digging, and a Coastie set me straight. No go. Wasn't a problem going into Canadian waters it turns out, as long as you don't disembark on Canadian soil. It was something else... It depends on the class of the vessel. If I remember right, if they have enough passenger capacity to have to file some sort of emergency plan filed with the CG, it is a certain class of vessel and falls under this and was no go carry, federal issue. (Like I say, IIRC, I could have misunderstood what he said, or misremembered, so see for yourself...).

I've been wondering some of the same questions myself.
The wife and I are planning a trip to Alaska this summer too. Plans were to fly from DFW ( sorry, no airports in Hogjaw. Nearest one is in Mena of the Mena Airport-Barry Seals- CIA concaine fame) so we'll drive to Dallas and fly to Anchorage. Rent a car and drive to Soldotna and to various points unknown.
I have family that live in Soldotna and Kenai.

You MUST go see the "Islands and Oceans" visitor center in Homer. Also a trip to the Sea Life Center in Seward. Maybe take a whale watching cruise in Resurrection Bay. Check out Captain Cook Park at the end of the Kenai Spur Hwy. Take a walk on the beach. There are some nice hiking trails around the campground that are not too long. Do a picnic there, if you are not camping.
