$1395 for an SMLE?

I stopped at my local Gander Mountain this afternoon. Imagine my surprise when I found a decent looking SMLE Mk. 4. Imagine my shock at the price, $1395! I asked the guy behind the counter if I could look at it. I asked about the price, he said he couldn't explain the price as he wasn't the guy who took it in on a trade. He did say, though, that it came with an extra magazine, which is quite rare. I said yeah, the local gunshow was selling Mk. 4's for between $300 and $400 and magazines for $30.

Had it been a sniper, maybe, but for a common SMLE, I just don't get it.

Use to get em' for $150 all day long but that was a long time ago. The market has pretty much dried up on em' so that along with it being Gander Mt. is probably why the price is so high.
Local sporting goods store called Dunham's has 91/30's for $159, I can order them on my C&R shipped to my door for $89 bucks. Seems like $70 over the order price is a bit steep but hey, if you don't have a C&R and don't know about them then you'll end up paying what they're asking or do without.

Maybe the "1" was an accident.......if so, it would make a lot of sense!

Ditto, I can see $395 for a nice SMLE but you can get a nice M1 Garand for $1395. That price just doesn't make sense even in a market that's dried up like it has.

It was no accident. They also had a P-17 for $1496 and a Swedish M96 for $995.

Yeah, welcome to Ripoff Mountain. There's literally NOTHING I've ever seen in GM you can't get cheaper elsewhere. I like going in and browsing, but I haven't bought a single thing there since my local store was new and it was a novelty.

I'm not even tempted by their holiday sales, they're still not good enough. Dick's is even more reasonable. Dick's is actually pretty decent on new gun prices, actually. Ammo, too. I've seen used guns at GM for more than what you'd pay new, without exaggeration.

Unless it was some incredibly rare variant (not necessarily sniper variant, but say unfired, late-production, or super-early production and un-altered and revamped)....Can't see one going for over $500.

The fact it's Gander Mountain doesn't surprise me.

You don't mention condition, and whether it was a Mark II. It's possible that it's an "Irish contract" rifle. I saw one at a gun show a year or so ago for $900, and my wife was pushing for me to buy it. They were bringing as much as $1200 then. If it was in new, unissued condition and within the serial number range to be an Irish contract rifle, while at the upper end of the range, no it wasn't a misprint on the tag.

I carry around the serial number range for the Irish contract rifles in my iPhone for when I stumble across a No 4 Mk II.

It was in good shape, and definately a Mk 4. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I have had several over the years.
