Which 45 Auto?

After several years of my Sig P226-9 being my primary home defense weapon I'm going to change to a 45 caliber. I'm very comfortable with the large Sig platform and may go with a P220. I owned one for several years but didn't shoot it much and it stayed in the safe until I finally traded it.

Before I buy I would like your thoughts on your favorite full size 45 and why you like it and trust it.

Glock 21sf. It wins by default as it was my first gun(and my only "defensive" .45 to this day) when I got out of the military, and I didn't know much about guns other than what I was issued. I just knew cops carry Glocks and a .45 is a big bullet. LoL (not to say I regret it, its a fantastic gun.)

But since you already have a Sig, if your willing to stay in that pricerange you could get a p220, or maybe a HK. HK makes some good .45s.

ETA: I wouldnt recomend using a 1911(or any other single action) since your used to using a DA/SA, safetyless gun. The same way I wouldnt recomend somone going from a 1911 to DA/SA, at least without training on it first. They really are two different animals.

If you already had one and didn't shoot it, what makes you think this one will be different?

I have a Glock G37 in 45GAP. Purchased it to try out the round, and have since added the smaller G38, and G39. I use the bigger GAP for "home needs", and the other two for CCW. For 45ACP would probably go with the aforementioned G21SF. Feels better in my hand than the full-grip G21. Thirteen rounds in the mag is also comforting. I would suggest some research as Glock makes several pistols in 45 cal. I also have the single-stack 45ACP G36 for CCW. It is my favorite CCW, and am wearing it now. Good Luck.

oh and I forgot this one. It is a VERY good gun(at least my 9mm version of it is) and it can be had with a very sig-like controll setup(decocker w/o a safety)

Mainly the cost of ammo. I got to where I just shot the 9 more and got comfortable with it. Since then I've really studied more about ballistics and prefer the stopping power of the 45 for home defense. I do wish I still had the P220 but that's water under the bridge

I'd say if you studied ballistics, you'd accept that you're not getting much improvement in .45 from 9mm.

USP45 or the Hk45. Both are amazing and a dream to shoot.

If you don't want a USP or 1911, you can't go wrong with the P220. Probably one of the best .45 full size pistols out there.

The P220 is a great gun to me. So is the USP. I would feel more than adequately protected at home by the Ruger 1911 or my M&P 45 or an S&W 1911. But I am not certain at all especially with some recent advances that a .45 offers anything substantially better than does the better 9mm ammunition.

I have always liked the 45ACP and I have always liked S&W. I carried a 4506 for many years but now if I were to rearm myself for HD or police work it would be a S&W M&P 45. Great gun.

My close second choice would be a new Beretta Px4 Storm Pistol in 45. Before the S&W 45 I carried a Beretta and like their quality.

Of course now I also have a Glock 21sf, which is hard to beat.

That's my two cents!!!

This would be my choice as well. Assuming you aren't hung up on an auto.

The .45 acp cartridge, to me, just screams out for a 1911, as others have said. If that's not to your liking, I would wait just a bit and go gen4 glock 30. If you don't wanna wait, then I'd say g30sf or xd. Be safe.

The OP asked which .45 Auto. He didn't mention he wanted only pistols.
