It's Official!!

I was sworn in last night and today was graduation!! I am no longer a recruit; I am a probie.

I start FTO on Sunday, so please keep me in your prayers!

To all of the officers on the forum, thank you for all of your advice and insight into how to do this job successfully and with professionalism.

Congratulations! I've got you by 4 days, just in case you were wondering.

Take it a step at a time, rook, and try to keep a sense of humor. You'll be fine

Stay focused in field training. Realize that you're going to **** up like it's your job for at least a solid year before you hit anything resembling a stride. It's okay...just stay the course.

Congrats man. Don't Sweat it. Youll be fine. Remember your training, keep your head on straight and be squared away. Best of luck on the street and remember to check six. You're in my prayers, and don't drink too much coffee. 10-42 for the night

Shut up and listen while at work. Don't do anything stupid or heroic or both. Learn and go home at the end of every shift. When you are off-duty, stay home and don't go out celebrating or acting the fool. Nobody is impressed with the badge, especially off-duty.

Many young rooks involuntarily traded in their police badge for a security badge because of dumb stuff that is easily avoidable.

Good luck and hope you enjoy the ride for the next few decades. It'll be over before you know it and it'll be the time of your life.

Do yourself a favor when it comes to dispatchers... everytime you think one sounds good on the radio, go right into dispatch center and see what they really look like. Sear that image of the 450 pounder sitting in that chair grazing all night on junk food into your brain, and never, ever go near one ever again.

Don't sear it too deeply in your brain, or you may wake up in the middle of the night screaming bloody murder after dreaming of her dressed in a tight Spandex catsuit.

Congrats.

Don't give everyone your card (if you have them) at the conclusion of the call unless the dept pays for them. Even then, a little piece of paper with a case number and the main phone number will suffice most of the time. People think they are some kind of lovely parting gift.

I know, kind of stupid advice but it's what I got right now.

And, whatever you do, do something.

Good luck,

MF

Be conscious of officer safety issues...searching prisoners, etc . FTO's tend to figure if you've got officer safety techniques ingrained in you bone-deep, they can cut you slack and give you time to learn on a lot of the other stuff. They're gonna pile the work on you. You'll find them deliberately saving less-than-agreeable jobs for you. Take it in stride...we've all been there.

Memorize the by-the-book statutory elements of basic behavior-control laws like disorderly conduct, public intox, the different levels of battery, intimidation by threats, obstructing vehicular or pedestrian traffic, however your state's penal code categorizes it. People under stress do and say things right in front of you that are violations...and often it's better, smoother, to make a clean arrest on-sight for a misdemeanor, and settle the "problem", rather than hold back and let things escalate into an even bigger problem.

Hang with it. It isn't as easy as it looks. Best wishes to you.

Another rookie is minted. Good luck, and what everyone else said. Coffee black, and no powdered donuts.

Thank you, everyone!

I try I always remember that I was given two ears but only one mouth for a reason. I just need to remember that I WILL MAKE MISTAKES and that I can't get really down on myself for them.

Yes, you will. Learn from them and you're allowed to be your worst critic...Also, don't be afraid to ask questions...

Also, no donuts with sprinkles....They fall onto your seat when you're not looking and melt onto your pants......
