Gen 4 G22 recoil
I just bought a Gen 4 G22 .40 S&W and the recoil is crazy. Everything I have read said that was suppose to be a little bit more than the 9mm recoil. Was wondering if I should get new recoil springs. You'd think with the new version of spring that is in a Gen 4 there wouldn't be that much recoil.

What ammo? And if you think that's bad on a 22, try a 27.

It sucks that you are experiencing something you didn't expect. Recoil is relative. I have found my G23 to be a softer shooter than other .40s I have shot. I would have predicted that a Gen 4 G22 is a softer shooter than a G23.
I would say either trade it for a G17, or buy a .40-9mm barrel for it. I see no benefit to using a pistol that is unpleasant to shoot.
If you haven't already, try 180 grain loads. There are also some 135 grain loadings that are labeled low recoil. Federal make one, IIRC. For the range I have used a Fiocchi 165 grain loading at 1,040fps that is pretty mild. I also have found the Federal HST 165 grain loading to shoot fairly mild for a SD load.

Glock .40s kick fairly hard compared to others like M&P and HKs. It is what it is. You will get used to it. 180 grainers should kick the least.
I just ordered some low recoiling Winchester Ranger 135gr just to get an idea of what that's like, though I probably would never use it for a carry round.

I can hardly tell the difference between 9mm +p+ in my g17 or g19 and 180 gr loads in my g23 or my sons g22.
But I've been shooting .41 mag, .44 mag, and heavy handloads in .45 colt for 30 years.

If the weapon is new then you'll need to take a break-in period into consideration. Before you say that you don't like, it fire a few hundred rounds and see what you think. Used is used, you're not going to recoup all of your money if you get rid of it now. I have a G23 and found that the 180gr have the least felt ercoil/snap.

How about a picking up a pair of Man-Up pills?
No really, couldn't resist. I know it snaps a bit more, but train with it and it won't be much of an issue. Or, take it down two model numbers and get the gun that really has a pair, the G20. It actually flips less, but will put it back more.

180 gr...My grip strength is good... I'm not new to this. I have been in the Army now long enough to retire. I've shot my fair share and then some. I don't mind the recoil just wondered it is was normal as I haven't shot a .40 S&W before. Mainly 9mm since that is what I carry when deployed. I want to get to where I can double tap and actually hit the target on the second shot like I do with my old Baretta M9. Thanks for all the replys. As far as the "Man up" pills....I prefer "Soldier Up"....LOL~~!!

a G17. Far less recoil in a 9x19.

Going from a heavy, steel 9mm to a lightweight .40 I guess would be somewhat of a change. I do think the Gen4's recoil less than the Gen3's, but recoil is a subjective thing.

Grip strength
I work out with the grip-strengthening tool.

If you find that you just don't care for the .40, you can try 357 sig. I really like to shoot the 357 and it seems to have less perceived recoil for me. The recoil characteristics are also different, it has less muzzle flip and twist. It seems to come straight back at you, allowing for faster follow-ups, in my experience.
You can convert the G22 to 357 sig with only a barrel change, the .40 mags work fine as is. The G22 and the G31 use the same parts other than the barrel and mag followers.
Some feel that if they are going to use a 9mm bullet that the 9mm is fine. I get that, but I personally love the 357 sig.

^^^^^^
This
I started on a Gen 2 G22, so didn't know the difference until I got a 9mm conversion barrel. The only time .40 bothers me is when I shoot my G27 right after firing a few magazines of .22LR.
May I suggest: SHOOT the thing until you get used to it!
As someone already suggested, It;'s all relative!

He can convert it to 9mm with just a barrel and a magazine.
Needs to be a conversion barrel.

Awesome, isn't it? Three cartridges in one pistol You can do even more with a 10mm.

As mentioned, try 180 grain loads. The Winchester ranger are soft to shoot even in my G27. The 155 and 165 grain loads can be more stout, though Speer loads a "light" 165 grain load for some LE agencies that asked for it. Here are the two loads for comparison:

I said before, I have 9 mm, .357 Sig and .40 cal in my G27, and cannot feel much difference between them. I have shot a G22 and it was lighter recoil.
The G27 .40 is not a big deal.
It is what you expect it to be.

It depends on the weight of the bullet AND the velocity. You can't just make a blanket statement like "180's shoot softer than 165's" and expect it to match reality. Look on manufacturer's websites until you find someone still manufacturing the old FBI load, a 180 grain bullet going between 950 and 980fps. That is a pleasant load to shoot, and is the load the .40 caliber pistols were first built around. They also use to make American Eagle ammo in a 165 grain bullet doing the same velocity and it was a real sweet shooting round for target practice.

What were you were trying to say there? 950 and 980?
