Is this a great deal? S&W 686

I found this locally for $500. Seems like a smokin deal. I'm going to see it wednesday with cash in hand. It's a 686-6+ model. What do you guys think? I'm no revolver expert so i need advice.

Great price. It is a lock model and I am not a great 6" .357 fan, but if you want a 6" get it.

Very good price

No locks for me, however.

Good deal, if it functions as good as it looks.

while I am not a fan of the 6" or the lock, that is a good deal. I might buy it despite those issues for that price.

I have a S&W 686, one with a 2 1/2 inch barrel. It is my second favorite revolver. (The first is a Model 29 with an 8 3/8 inch barrel.)

Here's the high points: (1) Make sure you check the crane to frame fit; it should be tight with no excess space and no, 'play'. (2) Then check the cylinder's timing and end play. Slowly cock the hammer on each cylinder and then try to wiggle the cylinder while it's locked in place. The less wiggle, the better. (3) Next, try to move the cylinder from front-to-back. There should be no movement. (4) Look at the cylinder gap. Try to compare it to any other revolvers that might be present. You don't want that gap to be too large. (5) Finally, one of the biggest snafus in buying a revolver is crappy gunsmithing. One basic test you MUST perform is the, 'push down hammer test'. Cock the hammer. Hold the revolver firmly in your gun hand; place your support hand behind the hammer and try to push the hammer down without pulling the trigger. It should not let go.

If it didn't have that stupid lock on it, yes it would be a great deal......

but if YOU don't care about the lock, GET IT!!!!!!!!!!

If I didn't already have a few revolvers I would get that at that price.

I guess it depends on where you're at.
In my area that would be a good deal on a pre-lock.
Only a fair deal on this one....

That would be a good price in this neck of the woods.

Awesome, thanks guys. While i know that no lock models are more desired it certainly doesn't bother me. You should be seeing a new pic of it on my table by tomorrow afternoon.

Yep, if you don't mind the lock, grab it at that price. A fine gun at at rather good price! While 6 inch guns are not easy to carry, they are a lot of fun to shoot!

I have that same gun and the lock don't hurt a thing or affect it's operation in any way. Yeah, I don't like the looks of it BUT don't let it stop you buying a great gun. Mine is more accurate than any no lock model I have ever owned and there has been quite a few of those. This one is definately a keeper. At the price I hope you get it and I don't think you'll be one bit sorry. Don't like the lock, just don't use it.

Congratulations. I have 2 6" .357s. If you want a real hoot with that one, load it with fullhouse loads and stretch it out at 100 yds.
