Buying my first 1911 - $500 for a Kimber is this a good deal?

I was just told that a friend of mine is sell a Kimber 1911. I don't know what model it is yet. But he is ask $500 for it. The way the story goes is he was given the gun by a family member.
Anyways which Kimbers do I want to stay away from or at $500 are they all a good gun, if they are not trashed.
What should I be looking for?

unless it's junk, you could probably sell it for 650 if you don't like it.

Unless something is terribly wrong with it, $500 is a steal.

Jump on it and snatch it up. I would say make sure it fires first but any model of Kimber for that price is a steal.

That is what I was thinking. Are their areas on the gun I should look for that can be problematic?

from my experience, not that aren't inherant to other makers. each one is sort of an animal of it's own.

the finish won't affect it's performance. just it's appearance. you may actually like the color. if you do, it's a win. if not, it can be changed.

the big thing is if you are comfortable with the pistol. if they allow you to test fire it, you'll know if it's a match.

good luck, and keep us posted. always happy to welcome another 1911 member to the family.

Unless it trashed, that's a nice deal.

If it has an external extractor you are getting an "alright" deal. It it is a traditional internal then it is a steal unless it is a clunker.

$500 for a Kimber is a great deal. Even if it needs work you can put a few hundred into it and still be under what one would cost new. It's been a long time since I've seen a new Kimber priced under $1000.

Custom IIs still start at about $725, maybe even a little less..

If the gun is OD I'm thinking of the 'covert models' which have an OD colored frame and all kinds of 'custom shop' features... which would be a steal for $500 in good or better condition
