The look the same to me.
My LGS has the 17 - a tad pricey, though.
I have never heard it called a "K17" or an "M17"
They are both the same gun. S&W official designation, when they went to model numbers instead of "Outdoorsman" and such, was the Model 17.
The "K-22" name was used to distiguish it from the other "K" framed target models. The "K-38" and the "K-32", as a sort of "official" nickname.
It gets confusing when the 4" model has a different number Model 18.
IMO the Model 17 is the greatest .22 da ever made. some might prefer the Colt Diamondback, and the Dan wesson has some fans. I don;t have a Colt But I have a DW and I much prefer the S&W.
Depending on age and condition a K-22 can bring an impressive amount on the market.
