We should also face the sober reality that government cannot protect us from all possible harm. No matter how many laws we pass, no matter how many police or federal agents we put on the streets...
Precisely. This is crux of the statist argument, that the state should assume all responsibilities for the individual - protection, health care, education, food, shelter, etc. And in return, the citizens cede their freedoms and liberty.
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!
- Rudyard Kipling, 1919
