Thanks.

I am not an XD guy. Is this an under reported problem?

CJ is correct...standard XD's. I don't know if this is a common problem. A department in a neighboring county issues them but I never get to talk to those folks. The problem may not be as wide-spread in the LE community because, well, other agencies just don't issue them (I'm holding back my real feelings...can you tell? ).

S&W 4566 w/Insight M3 for the 5 months of my first gig.
Now a Gen 4 G22 with my current department. So far I'm very happy with this pistol. I'd like to add a Surefire X300 as finances allow.

Please, please, please...may I PLEASE carry my G21SF?

That's the exact reason I switched from an XD to a glock 21. Others at my department have had similar problems with XD's.

Glock 21 my whole career. Don't have a choice it's what we get whether we like it or not. If I got to choose, I would go Glock 17 for the extra capacity.
A few changes on my BUG though, since we decide that.

We are now issuing a Gen 4 G22 or XDm in .40. No issues with the Glocks. But we have had to send a boat load of the XDm slides back to have the Trijicon night sights replaced. For what ever reason they keep going out on brand new guns. Other than that, no real issues with them. But we have had them issued for only about a year now.

My first academy in the mid-80s = 4" Security Six
Probationary year = a beautiful 4" early Model 586
After probation = a 1984 Colt Combat Gov't
Off Duty= Colt Combat Commander
In between there's been a Beretta 92 and a G17.
This dept has seen:
Glock 34
Springfield Loaded w/ lots of upgrades no MIM
Glock 22 w/ Laser Max guide rod
BUGs = Taurus 709, S&W 442, Ruger LCR (depends on my mood)
Would love to get a G35 put fixed Trijicons on and start carrying it now and then in uniform.

Started with a G19. Had that around a year, and then we began allowing .40 caliber.
Qualified with a G22 and Beretta 96. Never carried the 96, ended up selling it.
I carried the same G22 for about the last decade. Just changed to a Gen4 G17.
We're authorized several flavors of Glock: 34, 17, 19, 26, 35, 22, 23, 27. I have all but the 34, 35, 26.

Up till recently, my Dept was pretty good about duty guns. You could carry a Dept issue gun if you wanted, or you could carry a personally owned gun within the following rules- no SAO, calibers 9mm/.38 up to .45, no magnums, reputable manufacturer subject to instructor approval. Issued duty guns have included Glock 17 late '80's to early '90's, S&W 5906 early '90's-late '90's and Beretta 92FS late '90's to about 2 months ago. I chose to carry a personal gun and started out with a Sig P226 for the academy and for about a year, then switched to my G21 from about '93 to about 2 weeks ago.
A couple of months ago, we got a new Chief who is adamant about standardization. As a result, we got Gen4 G22 duty guns, which are going to be issued with no other choice. As one of the instructors, I qualified with mine about 2 weeks ago and started carrying it then. Everyone else will start as they qualify with them, probably in about a month or so.
Backup and off duty aren't issued and are personal preference. Mine have included a S&W M649, a Ruger SP101 and, for the past several years, a G26. Since we switched to the G22, I think I'm going to buy a Gen4 G27 when our income tax return comes back in Jan.

I was issued the G19 when I was a reserve (and I ended up buying it from them a couple years ago) and my current agency issued me a G22 RTF2, otherwise they're all mine.

Departments usually get pretty favorable trade-in deals. My current agency swapped even (or so I'm told) from gen 3 G22s to RTF 2 G22s.

This I took advantage of and bought the 4506.
Hopefully in a year ir two I can buy my current duty sidearm. Then when I retire a few years after that, I can keep the new one.

All my own handguns. When I started up until a few years ago they issued a revolver, Smth or Ruger, whatever they had, and if you wanted to carry a pistol you purchased it yourself. Except for a few guys who started before they were 21 and had to have someone, usually a parent buy it for them...
A couple of years ago they started to issue a Glock 17 as the issued handgun. Even has nice engraving on the slide with department logo.

I started with a S&W five-inch barrel revolver for the few weeks I was with my first department. When I came here, I was issued a four-inch barrel S&W. We shortly thereafter went to the Ruger Service-Six.
We went to the SIG 226 for several years, then transitioned to the .40. I traded my initial issue .40 for a 226R when we authorized lights.

Awww.... I feel for ya'.
Got a nice wanna-be Glock duty gun if you want to trade
I'd love to carry my 21...or a 17/34. Heck, I don't even like the .40 but I'd probably give my left test-tickle to be able to carry even a 22/35...and I'd buy it with my own money too.

We rotate out our duty guns at about 10% per year. Most senior guys get the new guns, least senior get the worst. We had Smiths from 1987 to 2000 or so. Then Berettas were bought while the Smiths were echanged. Then in 2003 or so Glocks were bought. It took us until 2010 or so until we went all Glock. The longer we wait to sell off guns the less they are worth when sold. That is why we shoot to replace them after 10 years, often it is a few years after that.
