Drivers License

A friend of a friend of mine was sitting on a lawn
sunning and reading, when he was startled by a
fairly late model car crashing through a hedge
and coming to rest on his lawn. He helped the
elderly driver out and sat him on a lawn chair.

"My goodness", he exclaimed, "you are quite
old to be driving! Do you have a license?"

"Maybe" he replied, "But I am 86 so I don't need
a license anymore. The last time I went to my
doctor he examined me, and asked if I had a
driving license. I told him yes and handed it to
him. He took scissors out of a drawer, cut the
license into pieces and threw them in the
wastebasket".

"You won't be needing this anymore", he said.

"So I thanked him and left."

comment on this post from my 77 year old father:

Sometimes I feel like I resemble this story. I'm not as confident driving at night as I once was. Sometimes I drive 55 miles an hour in a 65 MPH zone. I get a lot of recognition from motorists behind me. They wave at me, but not with all fingers.

I really really wish drivers actually had to take a driving test. I mean a real test. Not a dummy "are you breathing" test. I mean, when I was 16 I had to pull up next to a curb and do a three point turn. That was about it. Sure I had to drive out in Chicago traffic for a few minutes, but really, nothing tough.

Why can't their be some kind of skills test. Like cones, obstacle courses, tough merges, more challenges to make sure you're a GOOD DRIVER.

Old people would drop off and be unable to pass the skills test. The ****ty drivers would either need to learn how to drive or take a frickin seat.

Why can't we have real tests? Go to Germany, and if you don't know what you're doing on the Autobahn, they pull you over and take you off the road. In the US, half the drivers have no clue that the left lane is also the "passing lane."

I say learn how to drive or get off the road. Sorry old folks.

If we had to spend what Germans pay for a license, we would have far fewer and better drivers.

I saw that. He backed over some kids. Thankfully, no one was killed.

I remember my grandfather being pulled over in the early 80's. The officer told him he needed a new license because his was too hard to read. It was a lifetime permit issued in 1921.

Boy did he raise a ruckus at the courthouse when they tried to get him to pay for a new license that expired every 4 years!

I learnt to drive and got my first license in the United Kingdom. I had to do an emergency stop, reverse around a corner, parralel park, and a hill start to name a few things I had to do in the 45 minute test. Plus the car had to have Manuel transmission.

The answer to why old folks still drive is because their ungrateful @#$%$#% kids won't take them to the store and the ^&*%^*%&^ bus stop is a 2 mile walk. Hell if I could walk 2 miles I could probably drive. Oh and of course, if I took a cab I wouldn't have enough money left over to buy groceries.

I don't remember what a regular license is anymore but it costs me $100 to renew CDL, plus another $95 or so for my hazmat endorsement.
