NV assault weapon ban agenda

Heads up...

The NV legislature's Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice will be meeting on 08-28-2012.

Part of the agenda for that meeting will be discussion on whether or not to implement a state level "assault weapon" ban.
Information will only be presented by NV law enforcement (most likely LVMPD), the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence (CA anti-gun group) and the NRA.
There will be no public comment for this topic.

The current chairman of the commission is anti-gun, he's the person who prevented "campus carry" for CCW permit holders and opposed the various "castle doctrine" bills from last session.

The Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice will be meeting in...
Room 3137 of the Legislative Building, 401 S. Carson St., Carson City, NV.
Videoconferenced to Room 4412 of the Grant Sawyer State Office Building, 555 E. Washington Ave., Las Vegas, NV.

Mr. Horne

It has come to my attention that on Tuesday, August 28, the state Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice will be holding a public hearing to discuss a number of issues, including so-called "Assault Weapons."

As a gun owner and resident of Nevada, I am writing you to keep you informed that me and my fellow gun owners in Nevada are eager for you to hear from a representative of the NRA.

We urge you to remember your constituents who do not want more failed gun policies tried out on the good people of Nevada. We do not wish to have anything like the AWB that was forced on the American people by the Federal government or the current laws of our California neighbors, which proved to be a complete failure in lowering or preventing crime and additionally was an infringement on the rights of US citizens.

Thank you for your time.
I found the list of the people on the commission.

Here is a copy of the email I got from the NRA.

Quote:
On Tuesday, August 28, the state Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice (also called a legislative interim committee) will be holding a public hearing to discuss a number of issues, one of which will be so-called "Assault Weapons." (For more information on the often abused term “Assault Weapons,” please click here.) This legislative interim committee, led by Assembly Judiciary Committee Chairman William Horne (D-34), will be holding its hearing at 9:00 a.m. on August 28 in Carson City. This commission will not be taking public comment, but has invited a representative of the NRA to speak, along with members of the law enforcement community and the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence based out of San Francisco.

The NRA has been informed by Assembly Judiciary Committee staff that this is merely an informational hearing and that "Assault Weapons" will be the third issue on their agenda, with each presenter having no more than 15-20 minutes to speak. This commission hearing will be held in Room 3137 of the Legislative Building and video-conferenced to room 4412 of the Grant Sawyer State Office Building in Las Vegas. Their agenda has yet to be posted on the legislative website, but please continue to check here for updates. Additionally, a list of the commission members can be found by clicking here.

It is very important that those who influence policy for gun owners in Nevada know that law-abiding gun owners are paying attention. Please attend this hearing and contact Chairman William Horne to politely remind him that Nevada does not need another failed gun control experiment. Chairman Horne may be reached via e-mail at whorne@asm.state.nv.us, or by phone at (702) 457-6963 . Thank you!

Thank you for your e-mail. As a member of the Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice, I inquired whether an agenda item was scheduled to be heard regarding so-called "Assault Weapons." I was told that the agenda has not yet been prepared. I'd be curious to know how such an agenda item has "come to your attention." Thanks again.

NRA just emailed me this.

Quote:
Today, with more than one hundred people in attendance from across Nevada, the state Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice (a legislative interim committee) pulled the scheduled "Assault Weapons" presentation from the commission’s agenda. This meeting was previously reported on here. For more information on the often abused term “Assault Weapons,” please click here.
After Chairman William Horne (D-34) addressed the crowd, Commission Member Judge David Barker raised a point of order to remove the “Assault Weapons” presentation from the agenda. Judge Barker, who presides over the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, stated that hearing issues pertaining to “Assault Weapons” fell outside the parameters of the commission’s statutorily-defined purpose. He further stated that this was a legislative matter, not to be taken up by an interim committee.
Despite disagreement from Chairman Horne, who argued that in light of all the recent violence he felt the issue did fall within the Commission’s parameters, Judge Barker made a motion to withdraw the agenda item. Commission Member Phil Kohn, a Clark County Public Defender, seconded the motion. Chairman Horne called for a voice vote and the commission voted 8-5 to remove the agenda item.
Please stay tuned for more in-depth information to follow. The NRA would like to thank our members who contacted the Commission members and those attended the meeting to testify.
