Minor PF in Gen4 G35:

After trying a couple of boxes of sub-sonic 180gr AA&A ammo and having a couple of FTEs, I'm thinking the stock RSA is a bit too strong for these rounds as there was also weak ejection of the rounds that did function. But, the recovery was very nice with these rounds!

Has anyone swapped a Gen4 G34 RSA into a Gen4 G35 for this same reason? I'm thinking the RSA is identical in both platforms except that the G34 unit has a softer spring for the 9mm.........

Or, am I totally out of the ball park with this thinking?

I thought they both used a 17# spring but I could be wrong.

Buy an uncaptured guide rod and some lighter springs, also you'll need the bushing for the gen 4 gun to use aftermarket guide rod.

Mike is correct regarding Gen2 & Gen3 RSA's.

Mike is wrong regarding Gen4 RSA's.

You may use a Gen4 G17 RSA and still be legal in GSSF Stock categories. Using Ed's suggestion would require you to shoot in Unlimited category.

My suggestion is to shoot 200 rounds of full power ammo to loosen up your existing RSA.

I also recently used some 180gr AA&A in my G35 and had several malfunctions. It runs just fine with my reloads though...6.9 gr HS6.

Edited to say that the AA&A did pass the chrono test at the GA state match.

After researching some of the online vendors, I was thinking the same.....but they mostly refer to the earlier gens with the single spring. Still haven't found anything definite for the Gen4 Dual RSAs. The G34 uses a 0-2-4 stamping while the G35 uses a 0-1-4 along with different factory part numbers. So I'm thinking there has to be some difference either in the diameter of the overall assembly or the spring weight. Maybe Danny can shed some light per his post below.

Sure wish it was that easy; but since I'll be shooting Amature Competiton with the G35 (my first GSSF Match), then I'm locked onto factory parts......

So, are you stating there may be some difference in the G4 Gen34 and Gen35 RSA spring weights? Please elaborate!

As I noted to Mike, there are different part numbers/stampings between the two.......

My G35 has roughly 1000+ rounds through it, and still had a couple of FTEs with the AA&A sub-sonic going through 100 rounds........

My Son has worked up some reloads with his Dillon XL650 consisting of 4.0gr of VV N320 with 180gr MG FMJs @ 1.130 for testing; but since he's not coming into town till the end of month, we may not have sufficient time to test before the Lexington match......

If I knew for sure the G4G34 RSA was a weaker poundage unit, I could order one and run a few more boxes of the AA&A to be totally confident with those sub-sonic rounds.

Thanks for chiming in with your info. After talking with Doug Robinson in Smyrna several times, he finally called and left a message that Austria says the Gen4 RSA spring rates are "proprietary", and could not be disclosed.

Interesting, my issues all seemed to be FTF's and I finally nailed that down to mag issues. Once the problem mags got new springs it has been smooth sailing. Oh yeah, this is with the AAA .40 Minor. Getting ready to order another case.

Follow Up:

Tested ~100 rounds w/ 180 MG FMJ ahead of 4.0Gr of N320 @ 1.130. Chrono averaged out to a 135PF, and G34 RSA performed just fine. No FTF's/FTE's. Empties ejected out to a nice pile just to my right. Very soft shooting; and accuracy was excellent.

I sure do like N320. I now use it in all of my reloads.

i run 3.5gr of titegroup with a 180gr plated. factory stock gen3 35. very easy to limp wrist. ive only shot one GSSF match but regularly shoot idpa. jaeger makes a polymer replacement guide rod thats SSP legal in idpa and allows you to lighten springs.

The Jaeger Gen4 guide rod, not permitted in GSSF Stock Categories, should function fine with a 17# spring.

Darn... me too - so far. Don't know if I'll be able to keep this up with every handgun load I'll eventually need, but it's nice to try to standardize on one powder.

When the near max N320 load wouldn't run my racer reliably, I just changed the spring until it did. No such option in stock GSSF of course.

My Son and I have developed a few major and minor PF loads; and so far the N320 has been the favorite for consistancy, accuracy, stability, and clean burning. Also tried some LongShot that came in a close 2nd. This is strictly for the .40 cal reloads.....

So, I take it that you replaced your AA#5 with the N320 for your "Constanza" loads?

True.......however replacing the G35 RSA with a G34 unit allowed the gun to function reliably with the minor PF load. GSSF reluctantly agreed it would not violate the stock classification.......

I use N320 or AA#5 for my Costanza loads--whichever is on my Dillon at the time. Once I finish off the AA#5, it will be N320 all the way.
