Disappearing bullet

I was checking the zero on my hunting rifle after cleaning the bore (Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308 Win) and after it "settled down" (it takes about 4 shots before it's consistently accurate from a clean bore) I fired a 3-shot group. I twitched on the first one, but the second shot was good, and the third one I know was good because I saw the crosshairs dead on the center of the bull's eye when the trigger broke.

I went up to the target and there were two round holes in it, about 2 inches apart from each other, and no other holes within 12 inches. The bore is clear.

Two scenarios if your scope has a solid mount and is not broken. As stated , two through the same hole (it can happen) or a bad projectile that was a total flyer .

I think it might have been the former, because looking closely, one of the holes was not perfectly symmetrical, but it was a target sticker on a corrugated cardboard box, so that could also be explained by the alignment of the hole with the corrugations in the cardboard.

Don't over clean your bore. Just wipe it out with a couple patches with CLP and one dry patch. After hunting season you can clean it good if you like. As for the missing bullet it happens, dosen't take a lot, flinch, bad round. I have done it a few times.
If two went through the same hole you can usually tell from looking at the back where they exitted the target.

Well built rifle can do hole-in-hole often. My custom built gun can do one slightly ragged three shot hole at 100 all day long.
