I'm curious if anybody uses a light with a fiber optic style sight and is the ambient light from it enough to "light up" the rods?

Regular FO rods will do nothing for you without ambient light. Using a flashlight and/or weaponlight in the dark will not activate the FO rod, but it will contrast the outlines of the blade and notch clearly, against the lit background.
