So my birthday is during hunting season and my wife just told me to spend the money and get the 6.8 upper I wanted. I have a s.s.a.l.t mount (bought for a good price here) and a nikon prostaff 3x9x40 on the way. This will be a dedicated hunting upper.

Before I pull the trigger, anyone want to convince me I'm going the wrong route here. Shots are 50 to 200 yards tops where I hunt. I was thinking about a bolt action in .308 but I want a hunting AR platform for some reason. I've been hunting with a 30-30 for years now and just want something else. I have a colt le6920 right now and would be using that lower until tax time, then I'd build a lower for it, if I like it this year's deer season.

The money is ready to be spent, and usually I just buy what I think I want. The reason I am asking is because this is the first purchase in the firearms world I've been hesitant on at all.

I'd buy a 10 or 15 round mag and some Hornady 120gr SST for hunting season too.

He's got upper, barrel, rail, muzzle, bolt carrier, and gas block. What else do you want?

Preoccupied I guess.

I would find another rail, pin the GB, pass on the coated BCG, stake the carrier. I find it odd that staking is an option and not standard. Kinda like optional drivers airbag. I don't know much about Bison but that would make me walk. YHM is not high end as they claim.

Bison armory is pretty good for 6.8 uppers.

I, well my brother used my 6.8 this year on his caribou, and after the performance it gave, I would have absolutely no hesitation about taking it for deer or black bear.

Pick a good bullet, I'd suggest the OTM, or Barnes X and run with it.

I have to agree with all the above. YHM rails are also rather heavy.

Do I really need a rail? I am kind of thinking of a free float forearm anyways instead of a rail. I could get the chrome bcg for $30 more. thoughts?

If you don't need a rail, especially for a hunting gun, I'd skip the rail and go with something like the Troy FF tube, and save some weight.

I love the Troy VTAC Alpha on my varmint build, the weight for the 15" is almost identical to the standard handguard and associated hardware it replaced.

If you want one, go for it. I would choose a different upper though. Bison doesn’t have a bad reputation but you can find good 6.8's a lot cheaper.
Personally, I’d go for a good bolt action in 7mm-08 or .308.

If you get a hold of Pete at www.ar15sales.com he has good prices. His web site is crap but he’s been selling for about 10 years and is an honest businessman.
If you want top accuracy, I would look at www.AR15Performance.com I have shot a 5.56 and a 6.8 from him and they were sub moa.

I talked to Ben from Bison Armory and he knows I'm on a budget. He hooked me up with a blemished reciever and extra flash hider he had laying around to keep my costs down. (Darn good price!) He got back to me in a few hours and was very professional. I am waiting to make the payment and I will have an upper coming my way before opening deer weekend. I couldn't ask for better customer service. I'll keep you guys updated.

They're fairly well made, but definitely heavy as heck.
