For the snake/animal people
Put my gear on the engine yesterday morning and the tones went off "public assist snake removal". We plucked this little guy out of an elderly ladies garden for her. He/she was beautiful, this years rattlesnake but getting beefy quick. Had a lady tagged by one a week ago in the same area.

We have snake buckets with locking lids on our fire engines so we drove it to an area that was suitable to release it. Our 2 most eastern stations do a TON of removals every year.

Yes it is, and yes they are bad bites. I have been on two in the last few months both times I was working on the ambulance. One was a PIG of a diamondback but it was a dry bite. Last weeks was a baby So Pacific with only one fang puncture, the swelling was already incredible and we had a 5 minute response time.

Yeah between that and the Mojave, people need to really watch where they step because they might not make it back home.

Here I am!! That is an awfully adorable little thing.
All my snakes are under my house for the winter I think. I haven't found any of them for a week or 2 now. I'll have to live vicariously through those of you in the warmer states.

Beautiful coloration. I've never heard of a 'Southern Pacific' rattler. Learn something new every day!
That looks like a rare find in the US. Good stuff.

A very beautiful, and a very deadly little creature! (I'm glad you let it go, though.)

very nice looking critter! i rescue on average 1 pygmy rattler a year from the ER. irritable little things. but then again, if i was shoved in a mason jar and chilled to well below my comfortable temp, i might get cranky too.
i've heard of the mojave, but never a SoPac. time to bust out the snake book!

They are actually quite common. They are nice looking little critters.

No doubt. More than half the bites I have gone on in 9 years were from people messing with the snake.

That's usually the case...snakes don't want anything to do with people. Girly-men these days...

DEFINITELY!
I'd rather mess with an Eastern diamondback than a pygmy anyday. Rather not mess with either, honestly.
