Space Shuttle Endeavor spotted in Los Angeles

Quite a sight to behold:

The Okie Corral

The Okie Corral

The Okie Corral

The Okie Corral

Watching this masterpiece of engineering go by and hearing the crowds cheer, makes one proud to be an American.
A once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Cool to see it. Complete bummer of the state of our manned space program. I am glad private companies are starting to step up to the plate, though.

The Okie Corral

I wish I could have seen it, I only got to see one fly over once while it was being piggy-backed home.

i definitely feel privileged to have witnessed many launches from both my home in central FL and also along the coast. i recall as a middle schooler, bein at KSC the day before the Challenger accident- and seeing her explode from the basketball court at school the next day. it always brought a smile to be scared by the windows rattling to that ba-boom as the shuttle coasted home. i miss those flying bricks.

my mom recalls feeling the earth shake in Orlando when the Saturn V's would lift off.

we should hurry up and get Orion off the ground...

Freind of mine who worked on the Apollo and Space Shuttle both E-mailed me today that he thinks rather than put it in a Museum it should just be cut up for scrap,in fact he's E-mailed me a lot since Obama canceled the Shuttle and some of the E-mails concerened the thoughts of other people who worked on the Shuttle over the years and they are not to kind to the anointed one.
My friend worked in Master Control in Houston almost 30 years and knows the top personal from all those years, and they all think America deserves better.

It sucks that the Johnson Space Center in Houston didn't get one. Pure BS Politics.

Could you share some of those thoughts from those who've worked on the shuttle? Genuinely curious to hear... Thanks!

I worked on the shuttle program at Fairchild Republic. We built the tail fin and rudder.

I did the instrumentation installation design for the tails, and the strain gage instrumentation and structural load calibration of the Columbia tail (Columbia was the engineering testbed)

I also did the thermal testing of the carbon seals (like carbon brushes on a commutator) of the rudder fin joint. It had to keep re-entry plasma from getting inside, because the aluminum structure couldn't stand up to that heat.

I am not happy to see the shuttles retired.

Someone on the radio brought up that as crummy as the LA streets are with potholes and sinkholes, it would be funny (in a gallows humor way) if it fell in a sinkhole on the way to the museum.

Can survive going to space and back. Can survive getting carried to southern California. But LA killed it.

I think they have this in mind though...I guess they're going to have it drive over metal plates or something to help distribute the weight.

California and Los Angeles both deserve the ire and ridicule they receive. I say that as a resident born and raised near LA.

That being said, the Science Center where it will permanently reside IS a nice place. Lots of tourists flock to this place and other points nearby. The Shuttle is a great addition.

Why Los Angeles was chosen over over locales, I can't even guess. Cut it up for scrap? The greatest, most complicated machine ever built? (over 2 million moving parts) Get real.

I'm surprised it didn't get stopped by a homeless guy, to wash the windows for some change.

Could you picture living in one of those houses, not knowing it was going to come past, and waking up after a night of heavy drinking to see THAT out your window?

I have no love for Obama, but your bud and a few others here need to get a clue.

Not having follow up space capability rests in the hands of G.W. Bush. He is the POS reason we don't have manned space capability in the USA today. 8 years in power, including full congress majority, yet nothing but mouth for the manned space program.

The Shuttle was "OK" and well past it's prime. It was always a Wile E. Coyote engineering train wreck with a catastrophic risk of total destruction in the double digits on a good day.

Your friend is dead on in one respect. America does deserve better. We should have landed on Mars by now if the majority of idiots in this country weren't more impressed from Kardashian's latest spooge covered dress than scientists designing interplanetary vehicles.

Rant over
