Moving to the foothills of Tucson, AZ, looking for information
For Tucson locals:
I will be moving to the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson soon and am looking for a good neighborhood to rent in. I have found several apartment complexes at the intersection of E Sunrise and N Swan, as well as one at E Skyline and N Swan. Are these good areas to live in? My experience with large apartment complexes has been lots of noise and a fair amount of theft, and quite a few section 8 tenants (some who are working to better themselves and some who aren't and just cause problems.) What will living in those areas be like? I am limited to about $600/mo rent, so no country club living for me!
If anyone could give me some tips on where to look for apartments in the foothills area, I would greatly appreciate it!

Looking at the crime mapping, it seems quiet compared to the other areas around there.

I usually spend a week a year visiting family in Tucson. I've driven though there before and it seemed like a decent area.

Forget about living in Tucson and check out Benson.
Low crime and it's a nice 30 minute drive to work.

I lived in Tuscon for 6 years, down around the Craycroft/Wilmot Rd. area. Only thing bad about the city is the traffic nowadays!

One more thing that I want to add to this, when you move there, you absolutely MUST take the drive up Mt. Lemmon. It'll be pretty much in your back yard. There's a ton of breath taking scenery, great hiking and mountain biking, even skiing in the winter. If you're into astronomy, they have the Mt. Lemmon Sky Center. At the ski area they have an annual Oktoberfest. And going up there is also a great way to escape the heat in the summer.
Both of these pictures were taken while standing in the same spot.
And turn around...
On the ride down, make sure your brakes are in good working order, and use your gears to keep your speed down. Otherwise you could end up like this...
I know it doesn't give you any more information about the neighborhoods you're looking at, but if you're an outdoor enthusiast you might find it usefull.

That's great, thanks! I am definitely an outdoor enthusiast. I'm going to take a trip there before I move to make sure it's the place I want to be, but it sounds like it's a great place to live.

Bunch of pot smoking, tree hugging, hippy liberals.
The ladies don't shave their pits but the men do.
Welcome to free AZ and I'm kidding about Tucson. Pima Pistol Club hosts some outstanding matches and you can catch a second rate college football team at the U of A.

Haha, you had me going there. I visited Asheville, NC to see if I wanted to live there. NOWHERE could be more hippy than that place! I got outta there so fast.
Tucson, on the other hand, Tucson sounds good so far! Going to visit soon and am very excited!

There's a reason that those locations look so good on the City of Tucson map...
...they're outside the city limits, in unincorporated Pima County, and the city has nothing to do with them.
Repeat your search in the right jurisdiction: http://www.pimasheriff.org/prevention/crime-maps/
(They're still very nice areas where people have jobs. You'll do slightly better if you look for a house to rent in the same vicinity.)
