A friend of mine got one when they were new on the market. It didn't work well, but he was a skilled handtool gunsmith and he tinkered with it until it shot reliably. This involved a lot of Colt small parts and refitting. But it then shot.
He kept it lubricated and had no problems with galling.
It was not at all soft, he shot it thousands of rounds of what we would now call +P and there was no real wear, just a little burnishing of the coarse finish on the frame rails.

Another early buyer here is a toolroom machinist. He welded and cut on his until it worked, too. It has the oddest looking feed ramp I have ever seen, but it feeds any bullet he has tried over the years.

Great finger shredder.

You ain't an M1911 Man until you cut your thumb on the thumb safety and slide release on the AMT Hardballer.

Related - had a AMT Back Up in .380 many years ago. You could truthfully say most of the negative comments here about that pistol.

Gave it to a LE SIL years ago..she has since moved on to Glocks and Kahrs.

Randalls were better quality. They sell for some good money these days.

Don't want to dig up old bones but I bought my longslide in the early 80's and am still shooting it. I keep waiting for the bad things to happen.

YMMV

I had one, it looked great and shot well. I got some good lube to fight the galling. But when it wouldn't shoot my reloads, I got rid of it. All my guns have to be practical and useful. I don't have a use for any weapon that won't shoot anything but new ammo.

I had a Long-Slide for a Long-Time...

I didn't shoot it a whole lot, but didn't have any problems with it either....factory ball, or my own reloaded lead round nose rounds. I did use liberal never-seeze on the frame to slide rails.

Kinda' sad I sold it.....well...not really sad, but it wasn't a bad gun for me.

I always heard they were junk. Last summer I was at the range when a guy set up next to me with one. Said he hadn't done a thing to his. We traded off for a mag apiece and his gun had a sweet trigger and shot like a dream. Had to kind of rethink that whole opinion.

Nice to hear Ron. Most haters never even shot one. Just read about them being junk.
Glocks for carry and home defense but have a Hardballer for range fun. Shoots tight groups. More reliable then my Colt Combat Commander. My opinion... and we all know what that's worth.

Far from junk,.......most owners were just not smart enough to keep them lubed properly.

Very true, Greg. Early stainless certainly needed plenty of lube.
