Would anyone not recommend Progressive Insurance?
With our renewal coming up I sought quotes from 4 large insurers--Progressive, USAA, State Farm and Allstate.
Progressive was half the price of my current auto insurer and very close on homeowners. USAA came in second followed by Allstate and State Farm. Top to bottom probably $150-300 difference per year.
With low pricing and being a local company this should be an easy move but I'm concerned about how they handle claims, especially homeowner claims.
Any reason why I shouldn't consider them?

I had Progressive for several years and switched to Geico two years ago and saved about 40% (really). Geico is much nicer on the phone too.

It's been 15 years, but I had Progressive 15 years ago.
Car was in an accident. Progressive called and said rates are going up and we're paying out for the other cars' (plural) damages.
I told them to pound salt and pay me for my car. Had to get a lawyer involved.
Progressive didn't even read the (might I say badly written, shame on you lazy cleveland pd officer) crash report.
this is what happened:
lady in a jeep goes over bridge, slides on ice, hits curb and says she is hurt.
officer is out with her now.
my sister-in-law (well, ex-sil) is driving my ex's car, goes over same bridge, slides to a stop, hits no one and is basically parked on the side of the street in a parking area.
she gets out to see if any damage from bumping the curb. nope, nothing. cop runs over and asks if she is ok. she's fine.
she and cop watch as another car comes over the bridge, slides and hits my ex's car and pushes it into the unoccupied jeep. whoa. ok, this dude is ok. ok, just property damage.
dude gets out and tries to take off (he has no license). cop grabs him, puts him in police car.
now another car comes over the bridge, slams into all three cars and gets out and falls down (he's drunk).
anyways, i see:
jeep into curb with damage - 1 crash report, 1 unit
my ex-sil into curb, no damage, no crash report warranted.
car into my ex's car into jeep, new crash report with 3 units.
last car into all 3 cars, another new crash report with 4 units.
well, lazy cleveland cop writes it up as one crash report but does narrate it so you can tell it is all different crashes.
well, we are the only one with insurance (Progressive) and lady from first jeep is saying she is sueing for injuries and Progressive was going to pay out.
I kindly told Progressive, hey dum##*(#(, this lady was never in the car when my UNOCCUPIED car was PUSHED into her car. How are we at fault anywhere in this???????
Progressive didn't want to hear it, their crash experts ruled on it with their ACTAR certified people. Screw that, I can out ACTAR any of them. Had to get a lawyer who did the case for free thankfully and Progressive finally paid us for our car and said they wouldn't raise our rates and would tell the other three people with no insurance to go pound salt.
after the check cleared, i got rid of Progressive.

I have Progressive for my auto coverage. I've had them about 4 years and had my first claim last winter where I was at fault, nothing damaged except my car. The whole process was very smooth and easy. The next month was time for my policy renewal, and my rate dropped about 20%.
Needless to say I still have them.

If you are not a progressive (liberal democrat) and politics trumps much, you should stay far away from them. Look it up, they are called "Progressive" for a reason.

My auto insurance experiences with them have been good. I wrecked my beater car back in July and the whole process went smoothly from initial claim to picking up the check.
Now homeowner's, that's a different story. They had me insured through Homesite Indemnity Company, who basically screwed me on a claim for no apparent reason.

I've been through a few different insurers, since it used to be hard to find someone that could send me a bill reliably. Progressive was a bit more than the lowest, but the were more reliable with billing so I went with them. When I had an accident that totaled the car, they were helpful over the phone, had someone out to assess the damages right away, and paid promptly without any shenanigans.
I dropped Progressive later for some billing nonsense. When I considered switching back to them, I was told that there was an outstanding balance. I don't remember why there was or why I had reason to believe I didn't owe it... but I switched back when it became cheaper to pay that balance than to pay anyone else for insurance.

Now that sounds like a cluster. Lot of paperwork for him.
I've had progressive for a long time, no issues.

Our Progressive auto policy is about a year old.. Never had a problem. Just recently added renters insurance when we moved.

Wife had Progressive before we got married. She never had any real complaints other than they never would go down in rates, just up. Even after she turned 25, the rate still went up a little bit.
She ended up switching to Mercury since it was cheaper than she was paying Progressive even after adding me and the renters insurance. The car policy was a little bit better too.
They were willing to talk numbers a little after finding out she was going to cancel, but after hearing what she would be paying Mercury, the girl said that is really good and can't beat it.

insurance
I have 2 houses, 3 cars and a motorcycle with Allstate. The few claims I have made have been handled immediately and to my satisfaction. Hit a deer and check the next day for instance.

I've had USAA for years for our cars and bikes. USAA no longer insures bikes (at least if you buy a new one) but has partnered with Progressive. I've not had any claims and just pay the bill.

Lewis also made donations of $3 million and $2.5 million (both of which were reportedly matched by billionaire activist George Soros) to America Coming Together (a liberal political action group which has since disbanded), and MoveOn.org (a progressive/liberal political action committee and public policy group) in 2004.

Given their rates, it's hard not to consider them--I'm just concerned if there is a claim that the rates will jump, besides the connection with Soros & Co.

I've had my homes, RVs, and all vehicles except motorcycles insured with State Farm for over 30 years. Every time I get a quote from somebody else, it is always much, much higher than what I pay SF. No real experience with their service as I haven't had an accident since 1969.

Had Progressive for about 10 years for my motorcycle policy. Had one accident where a driver made an "emergency" right turn across my lane and into my bike. No real damage, just knocked it down as I was stopped at a red light. Progressive agent asked if any damage that would require payout was apparent. Nope, just a couple of scratches that can be buffed out. No rate increase or anything. Very easy to deal with and they stood by me in regards to not holding me responsible for an accident that I did not cause. +1
Few years later, some low life ****ing s**mbag stole my sport bike. Reported it to the police, called Progressive. They asked a few questions and had me come into an office to fill out a couple of forms. They could have mailed them, but the office is within walking distance so quicker to use feet. They reviewed the information and within 3 days had the bike paid off. Another +1 for them.
They seem too be an awesome and easy company to deal with when you need to. The only negative I can see with them in the whole political issue that is pretty well known. They would get a slam dunk endorsement from me if it were not for that.
