Police Helicopter crashes in Atlanta

Sounds like an Atlanta PD helicopter has crashed tonight, killing 2. I can't get the link to work since I'm on my phone but I saw it on www.myfoxatlanta.com but they haven't said if the casualties were LEO or civilians on the ground. It crashed into a CVS parking lot while enroute to assist with a dispute. Prayers to those affected.

Man that sucks. Clipped wires and sounds like they were flying to low.

They were looking for a missing girl, who was found later.

I watched the local news as the 'story' was unfolding and had to turn the damn sound off. Those ignorant on scene news people are idiots with what they say to just fill in air time. It was disgraceful to the officers who gave their life.

RIP.

RIP to the Officers.

Although it's too early to speculate, I will opine that I seriously doubt that they were flying so low that they hit power lines as the media reported. Obviously they hit them at some point during the emergency, but it was not the initial cause of the event.

Not to diminish the situation, but police aviation is much safer than street patrol and ranks much lower than many other forms of aviation operations in terms of danger.

Several witnesses reported it sounded like it lost power, some reported it spinning on the way down. It sounds like the power lines could have been clipped as it crashed and were not the cause. We will have to wait and see.

The local news is reporting that the chopper was if 1960's vintage. That would make it about 45-50 years old. Is that old for a chopper?. Maybe M2 or one of the other chopper pilots can give some info.

Prayers for the families.

You might be surprised how long an airframe can be kept in service.
