$300 - what to buy?

Which 'tactical' shotgun would you get for $300?

I'm thinking Mossberg 500 Persuader or Maverick 88 & a Hogue shorter LOP stock.

That's the way I'd go. Keep it simple.

Pure low cost? Hard to beat the 88.

Best of both the 870 and 500 worlds. I'd be totally comfortable with one.

If 300 is the budget, definitely the 88. I saw a black Friday ad where it will be 159.00.

I just like the safety on the 500 enough that the 88 doesn't do it for me.

I'd go 870. Can get a 5077 (18.5", 6-round tube, polymer furniture) for about $320. Now if that's a solid budget (meaning it has to cover everything), I would do the Maverick. Still a great gun, and at half the price, you'll have a lot left over to get yourself some ammo or extras.

Just curious, what don't you like about the safety on the Mav 88?

Just checking. If you we're close to me I might have had a 870 for a good price.

Between those two, it boils down to where you want the safety. If your going to stay with the Hogue/traditional style stock then the 500 is the way to go but if you want to go with a pistol gripped stock then the 88.

If your budget is that tight. I think you can cut the Mossberg 500 factory stock shorter without having to spend any money.

I bought a 20 Ga Mossberg Crusier about 16 years ago for home defense and have never regreted it for one moment. The thing has been loaded and ready to go 24/7/365 for 16 years with never one problem. I take it out about every 6 months and shoot the #3 buckshot that's in it plus a couple boxes of slugs just to make sure it will do what it's asked to do when I need it and to recycle the ammo.
Only thing I've ever done to it was remove the pistol grip and replace it with a short rifle stock. There very light and compact and have no doubt that a 20 ga using #3 buck will get the job done in home defense situations.

Any of you guys looked into the Savage/Stevens Security model? Seems to land right in this price range, has bottom eject like a BPS, ghost ring sights, 18" barrel. Looks like a pretty solid gun.

Go buy a Maverick, Mossberg, or Savage. What ever of those you like. Then invest in all the 2 3/4 standard loadings of Buckshot and plain jane Slugs you can afford, with a few boxes of high brass lead shotshell loads.
Shot loads for game, Buckshot for the unfriendly and Slugs for stopping the worst threats incuding a windshield shot if needed.

It's not that I don't like the safety on the 88, but I prefer on top of the tang/back of the receiver. My Dad used to say "It's called a trigger finger, not a safety finger". Some of my favorite rifles have them there and I find it a smidge faster in some situations and it is handy for either hand. Of course it rules out a "pistol grip" stock but that's OK with me.

I also find that Mossbergs are a bit easier to "administratively" unload. That is unload without running the rounds thru the chamber. They are a bit easier to load, to me, as well.
