Religious Fallibility

We have just seen the world fail to come to an end again. This time it was the Mayan religion which failed. In the past the Christian religion has failed for many times in making the same prediction. Probably most others have as well.

The Mayans had a relatively advanced civilization which developed writing about 700BC and was producing stone carved solar callendars by about 400BC. They had a good understanding of mathematics and astronomy and so if religion was related to intelligence and knowledge we would think the Mayan religion had a better chance of being right than Christianity, but it still got it wrong.

Given the very large numbers of religions that have existed throughout history and pre-history and the way that they fission into variant cults whenever there is not a brutally powerful authority to enforce its purity, why would any sane person believe that his religion was anything more than an unfortunate accident with no sensible possibility of validity?

Seems to be part of our DNA. The willingness to believe in the extraordinary.

Faith wins wars. Faith drives people to do irrational things. Faith is an effective weapon.

It is comforting to know that God is on your side. It is defeating to think that God is somehow against you. I don't know if most people really think about "their religion" and whether it is rational or not. I left Christianity because it started to matter to me that is was not rational. I still have "my religion" because I find it comforting, and helpful to know that God is on my side.

Even the Papal myth of infallibility has been shattered.

When God is ready He will return, He will Not come and end the world when some pagans say too. Only God knows, if anyone makes such a prediction or buys into it they are not of God.

All religions fail because in the end, none of them ACTUALLY speak for their particular flavor of "god" that they CLAIM to speak for.

All religions are nothing more than scams, have been scams for over 10,000 years, are now scams, and forevermore shall be scams.

Amen

The thing here to know is that God is in control, not the mayans. Also for the record, the 2012 mayan thing wasn't about the end of the world at all, it was about ushering in a new era, a new age. There have been people of the Christian faith that have predicted things, such as rapture dates that have come and gone, but that's not Christianities fault, that's peoples fault. When God says it's time, it will happen.

Prove God actually EXISTS before you make any claim as to who or what is "in control".

Blind acceptance as to the existence of God has been used to manipulate us as individuals and as a species ever since we stopped being hunter-gatherers.

NO ONE speaks for a God they cannot prove exists!

Not the Mayans, not the Pope, and not YOU!

See I have a real problem with this statement and the intellectual cowardice it allows people like you. "God is in control" right up until something like a school shooting happens and then that's suddenly all about man's free will. "God is in control" but we can somehow trump his control with our free will... especially when the outcome is negative and tragic. God gets the credit for any little positive thing that happens but none of the negative. If a man rushes into a burning building to save 20 children it was God working through him. But if a man rushes into a building and lays waste to 20 children it was man's free will and because God isn't allowed in schools. You people are mentally ill and dangerous to a modern society.
