AR manufacturers to stay away from?

I talked my wife into letting my buy a used AR15, under the condition that she will get my Ruger 10/22.

I've only ever had experience with my issued Colt M4, which has been through hell and back and has never had a problem.

My question is...

I'm always hearing people at the range, and online, complain about how the AR15 can be riddled with problems...so which AR15 manufacturers should I stay away from?..which aftermarket parts manufacturers should I stay away from if a used rifle has them installed?

If I could afford to get a Colt, I would..but my budget is low for this one, which is why I'm buying a used model.

Thanks for any input!

The only brand that seems to get universal condemnation is Olympic. I am sure you will hear other names as well. Never had a Olympic myself so I can not speak from experience but they just seem to get more negative that positive comments.

One option on a budget is to buy parts over time until you have a complete rifle. Not as instantly gratifying but easy to do and you will get what you want that way. But nothing wrong with a used AR either. Good luck either way

I passed on a used Colt 6920 a few weeks back for $850. It was in good shape and was bone stock with no amateur gun smithing. By the time I realized how stupid I was and went back in the shop the next day it was gone, duh.

I've got a bushmaster made Remington that has been flawless. Generally though, they definitely didn't make bushmaster any better.

Well, it depends on what you are using the gun for. I'd put some rifles in the no go category if it's going to be for patrol or other serious use. If it's just a range gun then just about any will suffice. DPMS for example. They are a generally reliable and accurate gun that would give you a ton of entertainment at the range but isn't something I'd want to take to work.

Yes they did. If you want an "old Bushmaster" buy a Windham. they are made at the old Bushmaster factory by the old Bushmaster crew.

Avoid Olympic, Model1sales, DPMS. There are more but that's all I have for now.

I have owned a lot of AR rifles over the years. I have only had significant problems with Bushmasters and Olympic Arms. The Olympic Arms rifle was not accurate. The Bushmasters had feeding problems, barrel index problems, sight problems and worst of all Bushmaster Customer Service problems.

Thanks guys!

I'm mainly using this AR for recreational use, and it'll of course be around for personal defense.

It absolutely won't be a field rifle for on the job...only Gov't issue for that

Seems like every used AR I find is an Olympic or Bushmaster..

The old Bushmasters are good guns.

Thanks, that is what I have been contemplating. Too bad Marlin could not do the same as the old Bushmaster employees accomplished.

Olympic is a terrible company. I had a K9GL that was constantly having every issue imagineable. I sent it back to Olympic, they said it was fixed and sent it back and the problems worsened. I sold it without regret.

i'll be the voice of dissent. my late model bushmaster has been a tackdriving, feed anything rifle.

never had to deal with the customer service, so, can't speak to that.

They are not all bad guns, there's just a high chance of getting a bad one. There are some Taurus pistols that have never had any issues too, but they tend to be the exception rather than the rule.

That was my answer to your original question. They beat Olympic Arms by a wide margin, from what I've read.

When someone tries to sell you a Vulcan/Blackthorne/Hesse & Olympic “run away as fast as possible” last but not any better any of the carbon junk.
