 What's it matter?
You've got better than a 50/50 chance that you're going to end up with a, 'brass to the face' problem, anyway! My (fairly) recently purchased 3rd gen. G-19 had the slide cutout made slightly oversized in order to accomodate the larger, 'Dip' extractors Glock started using. Now - and in light of ALL the subsequent extractor changes Glock has made - I can't get ANY EXTRACTOR that, both, fits and runs properly.
The whole gun is just one big $600.00 dollar mistake - My mistake!

If one fits better than the other that might be the best choice. If not whichever is less expensive. Or perhaps a third generation that is several years old.

Gen 3 here.
Or...maybe even a Gen 2 for my taste.

Happy with my Gen3, LGS made the call easy for me as that's what they had in stock. The replaceable back straps didn't interest me. I would have liked to get the extra mag but no biggie.

Gen 3. No brass to the face with mine.

I took about a half hour holding both generations and finally settled on the gen 4 and love it. Never thought a gun would be addicting but all I wanna do is shoot the thing

Have a Gen 4. Wish I had a Gen 3, but unusual reason. My glove size is 3XL. With the large backstrap on the gun, the mini beavertail on the gen 4 rubs the base of my thumb to the point of bleeding when I put 100 rounds down range. Others with big hands have had the same problem.
Gen 4 with medium backstrap is the same size as the stock Gen 3. I had to switch to the medium backstrap and an aftermarket larger beavertail. Just another of Glocks poorly engineered "improvements."

Just bought myself a 6-15-12 Austrian G19 Gen 4 and gave my Brother a 9-28-12 USA G19 Gen 4 for Christmas. Both have approximately 500 rounds each of various target, nato and +p ammo through them without any problems. Mine is now my EDC. HTH.

Get an older used gen3. Then you will have a reliable gun. I personally won't buy any 9mm Glock with a serial # that has a letter higher then "N" at the begining.

I'm in love with my recently purchased 3rd Gen G19. I've run various ammo through it without a single hiccup. No Brass-to-Face, feed problems, or ejection problems whatsoever. Definitely a keeper. First three on the S/N is "TTS".

As far as the gun, you can't go wrong with either.

Because they have cyber problems. If you're looking for a WoW gun, avoid these. If you're looking for a real world gun, and can shoot fairly well, buy with confidence without worrying about serial number.

There has been issues with some of the newer gen3 & gen4 Glock 9mm. The issue is erratic ejection and what is refered to on here as BTF (brass to the face). It will eject the empty casing into your face or off your forehead. Not all of the guns have this issue, but enough of them do for me to not want to chance it.

Who has them (Gen 3 or Gen 4)? I'm finding that they're pretty scarce right now. Gen 4 is the one I prefer, but as for a recommendation, I'd have to say an "older" Gen2 or Gen3 gun because of all the negative reports I'm seeing on the internet relating to BTF, etc. Having said that, my Gen 4 has not had a BTF issue

Finally shooting my Gen4 19...100 rounds down...
So far so good. 50 rounds of Winchester in the white box and 50 rounds of some top notch Estate (?) ammo. PERFECT.
I will run 4 more stellar loads in short order and I will report back here, or there... Good Luck! I really like the Gen4.
