It was a long day. We had one guy there, and extra people in to handle CCSO's calls in multiple districts outside our city. A real mess, and just an FYI, the media is screwing everything up, again/still.

Prayers for the victim's families.

How many are wounded?

Why did he kill himself when only two people were dead?

Prayers for those wounded.

Now we get to hear more stuff from idiot politicians and activists about how guns are bad.

A linked article from earlier this morning said there was an estimated 10,000 people shopping at the mall, and the local cellphone towers had been overwhelmed with the number of callers during the incident.

Lot of people.

It's a really big leap for people to realize that things like this happen, even this close to home. My last recruit was there with his family, in the food court, leaving 20 minutes before the shooting started. He was unarmed. He came to me last night and told me now he understood why I harped on him about carrying off duty, and carrying a backup gun.

There are a lot of questions, and a lot of things that don't really make sense about the shooter's actions. If you're going to show up with a mask, that would tend to suggest you plan on trying to get away. If so, why shoot yourself before the cops even arrive? If you bring an AR and multiple magazines, why only shoot a few people? 10k in the mall would tend to create a target rich environment. Whatever. I hope they don't release very much about the shooter. If they do, the media will humanize him as much as possible, talk to his poor parents who just didn't know what to do, and then focus people on the weapon instead of the shooter.

Masks have been used for centuries by ritual killers/torturers. Whether acting by themselves, acting on behalf of an organization, or on behalf of the State; they provide an anonymizing psychological terror to the victim, a psychological defense mechanism to the killers/torturers, and a dehumanized group identity to a group perpetrating these acts.

I'd venture to say that the shooter did it to terrorize his intended victims.

I believe it would be some ACTUAL progress, if any can be made, in lessening the number of these tragedies if the news outlets would simply refuse to use the shooters / perp / compost's name and photo, as most if not all do for rape victims. I'd love to see a graphic on the tee-vee behind the talking heads that was a simple outline of a head, with NOTHING else. No "Dead Perp.", No "Shooter" no "EVIL bastage" nothing.

Or maybe I am deluding myself.

Yeah, he got it working again though. I'm not privvy to all the details, the scuttlebutt is that it was a new gun that was dry, and that's why it choked. The other theory around the water cooler is that they heard CCSO announce when they entered the mall, so he found a quiet corner to off himself.

I also agree with this. I guy who worked for my department just started working for Portland PD and what little is available on his facebook it was his first night working and this happend. I was in vegas with some work buddies when this happend and we were talking about it and a couple were able to say the shooters names to the columbine shooting, I was a kinda mad. I went to a Grossman presentation and he refused to say names and I agree 100% with that. Screw them and what fame they want. I wish no one would remember them.

I want to beat my head every time I read or hear a similar story. We have veteran officers who still refuse to carry off duty, claiming they don't see the need . . .

I'm pretty sure EVERY agency has those guys; I know we do for sure.

^^ Just saw a Youtube version here...

Seems to be legit, but I doubt that anyone can verify the story unless that CCW holder was part of the investigation... which probably isn't final yet, if video is being reviewed, witnesses interviewed, etc.
