I was thinking this would be your best bet.

what ever frame size you deside on, get the 40 Cal. and a 9mm conversion barrel with a 9mm mag to fit your frame.

this way you can learn and practice with the 9mm and carry the 40 cal.

I have a G31 with a LWD 9mm conversion barrel and shoot a lot of 9mm at the range for practise, much cheeper than 357 Sig, if ammo cost is a consern, you'll get more "bang for your buck" shooting 9mm, and everything learned with the 9mm will translate to 40 cal.

just my $0.02 worth,

Go to a local shop and just hold the several models in the calibrrs your lookig to get. I would choose the glock 17.

My first (and only) handgun was (and is) a G23 and I never had a problem with recoil. I wanted the stopping power of the .40 in that size so I got it. No problem.

The 9mm will be worthless for civilians if JHP bullet designs become restricted. In case you don't know, "Cop Killer" bullets are on the table. Since you are associated with Law enforcement, I would probably not worry.

If anyone is not, you need to factor this. You may be limited to 10 round mags and FMJ or flat nose ammo. I owned a G2 22, a G3 23 and now I have a a G4 22. I have 1200 rounds through it and it is superior to the others and has never bobbled.

It has the best finish, machining and trigger of any Glock I have owned or shot. The grey finish is proving to be excellent.

For me, 9mm is off the table until I see what is going to happen. This only my opinion. I will tell you from what I see all he 9mm and .45 is off the shelf and there is still .40 out there.

Even if "cop killer" rounds are on the table, is that to say all JHPs are "cop killers"? They don't always do well against a vest. OTOH, they're much safer for SD.

Man, I sure hope it doesn't go down like that!

Wow I wasn't expecting such a huge response. I'm 19, so I won't be able to carry concealed for another 2 years. I'm not looking at the compact models right now since I can't CC. I'm leaning towards the G22, 4 of the other officers have the G22 in various gens and they have invited me to go shooting with them to get a feel for the Glock. So I'll be taking it for a test drive within the next few days

Whichever one you feel is most comfortable to hold, shoot, and carry. You don't want something that is uncomfortable to hold, you don't want something you can't shoot well, and you don't want something that is so big and heavy that you don't want to carry it every single day.

A .40 is not that bad if you spend the time to get used to it.

Hmmm... "Nice" to see that Glocks on average cost TWICE as much in Holland. Funny, as we're a lot closer to Austria than you guys... Hehehe

A new G17, goes for approx. 650,- which is about $ 857.-

As a detention officer you probably qualify for the great pricing of the Law Enforcement purchase program. I would recommend the 21SF or 21 Gen 4 but it may not be the most "portable".

I'd stick with the .40 since the 9mm & 45 ammo could be hard to get for a while. Both the 22 & 23 are great choices.

Well there you have it , unanimously ...... ?

To further your confusion , my favorite shooter and my go to gun for plunking always is my 17 ! I have a 36 for CC but in a pinch , I think instinctually , I'd probably grab the 17 vs the 36 or 20.........! I'm just so much more at home with it than any other pistol I have owned. Time spent is the key factor.

If you have access to a range where you can try different guns
do ! What ever caliber you spend the most time with is the gun you will rely on. If cost is an issue , you can't go wrong with a 9mm ! SHOT PLACEMENT........!
