I would like to stop email notifications from subscribed threads, but can't seem to find the switch.

Also, is there a way to change the background color to black from white? This bright white screen torches my eyes after a short time.

Go to your "User CP" and then on the left side of that page click on "Edit Options".

Find the section called "Default Thread Subscription Mode" and there is a drop-down box where you can change the automatic subscription option. Scroll to the bottom and click "Save".
