Ruger .22 mag
What do you all think of the Ruger LCR .22 mag for the wife for personal defense. She has the LCR.38 now. My concern is that she might shoot the .22 better than the .38 but, I like the .38 for the stopping power. Your thoughts. Thanks.

I wouldn't. I'd stick with the 38. Actually, I'd probably get the LCR 357.

I'd also stick with the 38.
Even standard 38 Special ammo is going to be more effective than the 22wmr.

Isnt this a question for your wife to answer. What does she feel more comfortable with. Can she shoot one better than the other.

The 22 mag is much better than nothing. Some of those smaller 22 mags can have some blast to them, maybe try some 22 WRF ammo if you do shoot the 22 mag.

Can she shoot and hit anything with the LCR .38 Special? If she can't, then the .22 Magnum is sure as hell better than all the misses with the heavier caliber.

Good choice, that's what my wife carries. She has an old High Standard snubby that holds nine rounds of WMR. She shoots it very well; in fact, she had the top score in her CCW class. The WMR is a wicked little round and has very mild recoil. It is also the only handgun ammunition in stock at the local Wally Mart.

The muzzle blast from .22 Mag is severe, louder than a typical .38. Before spending the $$$ on the .22 mag, have her try .38 wadcutter target ammo. While not as powerful as a modern SD hollowpoint round, it will still be effective and will have less recoil and muzzle blast, especially in a lightweight handgun such as the LCR.
I carry a S&W 442 as a backup and when I practice I use wadcutter target loads, and finish up with a cylinder of my +P carry ammo. I am not partial to recoil due to arthritis and this has been a workable solution for me.
Naturally, YMMV and this is just a suggestion...

Unless the lady is a highly experienced shooter, she shouldn't have to be armed with an LCR in .38 Special. Even with standard load, that mutha got a good snap to it.

If she cant shoot the LCR well then the solution is a heavier gun, not a smaller round.
