New AR
Y'know, I've honestly disliked ARs my whole life. Never liked the M16, not thrilled with .223 for anything larger than a coyote or so.
BUT, in 1993-1994 I got to looking at them, just curious what the heck everyone was bickering about.
Lately I've been looking half heartedly at various options. Seems $1600 is what it's taking to get into the EBR game today. -eh- a bit much for my blood just to have one.
All that changed today. Tripped over S&W M&P150R for a bit less than MSRP.
So, I'm a multiple EBR owner now, got four P-mags and a 40 rounder as well.
Should be a neat plinker, if nothing else. Hell if I get bored with it, I can always sell it for what I bought it for, right?

That'll have to wait until morning. They're tucked away. 5.56 ammo and hen's teeth have something in common so I just put 'em in the closet.
I'll take pics in the morning, though.

Congrats on the great rifle.
Give it a few months and .223 should be available again.

Herrglock
I was in the same boat 4 years ago. Used them for 24 years while in the service but never wanted one of my own. But like alot of calibers I own I was picking up tons of brass at the time (reloader) so I said what the heck I'll pick up an AR and have some fun- besides I didn't have a true varmint round - the .30 calibers mess up yotes real good most of the time and 22 rf was kind of light.

16" barrel so I'm not thinking fancy. If I want something shot from any distance I believe the .338 Win Mag or the .308 Win would about do it.
Thinking more household, plinking, Zombie closer use (before grabbing the cricket bat.)
I'm mulling over some magpul flip ups and am trying to learn the difference between the PTS and the USA versions. If it's just heat resistance then I really don't care which I get, I'll shoot this thing a few times a year max and if I really need it, it'll be within a long hallway so sights are ignored to in the way. Some day I may put a red dot on my b-day wish list but that's not all that pressing an issue.
As I said, I've not looked into AR based anything much at all so I don't even know what's out there.

Welcome aboard to the dark side Mr Glock.
I had a similar viewpoint and thanks to the Army had no love for the rifle. I climbed on board the EBR train back in October when it was apparent what the future would bring. Now that I have one I better appreciate the rifle and glad I bought one before the craziness began.

My view of the AR/M4 is good. It's a very manueverable firearm capable of most anything w/ a little training.
Avoid the PTS line. It is a licenced airsoft product produced by some offshore factory. I made the mistake of thinking they were the same thing until one broke.
I wouldn't settle on a cheap red dot. You don't need an Aimpoint micro but a cheap Tasco isn't going to help your cause. Then again the constant on for years feature that the Aimpoint allows is a plus for defensive reasons.

Skip the Magpul MBUS front sight, as your only option is to mount it to the gas block. Magpul specifically states on their website NOT to mount the MBUS front sight to a railed gas block, as the heat will damage the sight.
You can still use a Magpul rear sight, though. Maybe an inexpensive fixed, rail-mounted front sight on the gas block and an MBUS folding sight on the receiver.

Beat me to it. I have the MBUS rear and I have been very pleased. Seems tough, too.

I was the same way about AK style rifles; never wanted one....UNTIL Billy Bob tried to tell me I couldn't buy one. I now have 4, along with dozens of 30 round mags and some 75 & 100 round drums.
AND- Welcome aboard the multiple EBR train

I would suggest getting Troy flip up sights, Moe hand guard, and a Aimpoint Pro.

The mbus isn't made to withstand the heat from a gas block.

I think that's what he's talking about. I think I'll shoot a max of a hundred rounds maybe two/three times a year.

Once you get into the black rifle game, you will get addicted. Wont be long till you get the itch to cover it in some new furniture. I just covered mine with all Magpul Parts in Olive Drab. Looks great and didnt cost an arm and a leg.

I don't think it's total amount of fire that will damage the MBUS sight, but the amount you do in a short amount of time. Gas blocks heat up pretty quickly, so it might not take much for the plastic to start getting too hot on the front sight.
Either way, Magpul says not to do it, so I would suggest listening to them.
