The earlier Gen 2's had separate guide rods and springs and then shortly afterwards , they had captured springs/rods.

Yeah it's okay. Early ones were uncaptured. You can shoot it like that or pop in a new captured one. I put a new spring in one of mine and set aside the original parts.

Nice pics! A 2nd Gen G17. I used to have one before I converted it to 3rd Gen. I bought it in 1989.

I'm a Gen2 Glock guy as well.

I was lucky to find a very early G19 gen2 (11/1989)
It also has the non captured RSA.

Your G17 is very clean. Nice find

So I just picked up a 2nd gen, that also looks like new. What "upgrades" do you all recomend? somthing to be improved upon, or was there a safety issue witht he stock format?

There are way too many of these firearms out there for something as common as a 17 to ever be anything really collectable in most of if not all of our lifetimes. The difference you would ever get for an unshot example would be negligible campared to a well maintained example to all but the hardcore collector. Keep all the tools, the box, paperwork, etc...then...

Shoot it...enjoy it. These aren't safe queen by any means.

THIS, I do not see why you would not want to shoot it. I understand not carrying it to keep the finish in its original form but shooting it wont hurt it. Just clean it after shooting go on. Nice finds btw guys...

I have a Gen2 that I bought in 1992 or 1993. I shoot it. I've also put Warren Tactical sights and a dot connector in it. It's probably worth about what it was when I bought it--maybe a little more with all the panic buying.

If not, I'll do the upgrade and shoot the thing.
Order your own parts and upgrade it and shoot it. Just take good care of it and keep all of the original parts.

Just back from the range and my 15 year old son shoots this thing like an old pro. This gun is definitely a keeper and a shooter.

But you can get it to Glock so they can put in the little stress cuts they recommended on my 2nd gen guns.

Gen 1, G17 with all black internals i shoot and carry all the time. i got it for $200 and had the slide refinished. the upgrade is really only 'recommended' from what i have read, had nothing to do with safety issues. Both the Gen 1 and Gen 2 are made to sling lead. The 17 was made in 1986 and will outlast me and prolly my grand kids!
