I have been doing it for quite a while and you probably have too, that is in order to set the rounds to the back wall of the mag.
Since my G19/gen4 is fairly new with tough magazine springs, when I have 15 rounds in there it seems that smacking it a bit against my opposite hand isn't doing much.
Perhaps it really is insignificant anyway, and maybe its just a silly habit! Anyway, what do you think? Is it possible to slam off a round by wacking it too hard?

With your hand while the magazine is not in the gun? No. There's nothing that can hit the primer.

I do this, too, but I do it about 3 rounds from full capacity. Actually, I tap it on my thigh, then slap it to seat the rounds to make insertion of the remainder easier. Have since 1996.

This goes back to a habit developed by soldiers when loading rifle magazines so the front of the bullets cleared the front of the magazine and fully seated.

Thats the way I was taught at the Ft. Bragg Home for Wayward Boys in the fall of '68. I still do it out of habit/tradition/muscle memory.

I would not worry about it. I would think the forces could be more for instance in a car wreck and I have never heard of a problem with rounds in a magazine in a car wreck.

No. It's not powered by nitroglycerine from an old cowboy movie.

Tap it against your helmet.

Tap back and bottom against palm or against knee. Situates the rounds and also will generally stop the mag from rattling if that occurs.

How would a round go off tapping with one's hand? Impossible.

As long as the primers are flush with the case head, there is no way that they can go off inside of the magazine by hitting the magazine on a blunt object. It takes a fast, directed impact to the primer to set it off.

In most mags, the primer is not touching the mag wall, but angled away, as the round is seated at an acute angle to the back wall, so there is nothing to ignite the primer.

Maybe if a piece of gravel lodged against the primer, and you gave the mag a good solid rap, say against a workbench, it COULD fire. Good reason to inspect and clean mags on occasion.

Even if the primers are above flush with the case head they can't go off. They CAN'T touch anything. Look at the magazine. It's a parallelogram, not a rectangle; the top edge of the case rim is the only thing touching the back wall of the mag. Or

to look at it from the mindset of it being an actual rectangle, you would have to imagine that the rounds are "angled up". Either way, same deal: only the top edge of the case rim touches the back wall of the mag.

Slap away my friends. Physically impossible to set off a round in a Glock mag this way.

They still teach it that way in 2010.
