I'd put a contraceptive in the public water supply. If you want to reproduce, you have to come before me and prove you will instill good values, work ethic, and can afford to pay for YOUR child. Then, I give you the antidote.

My one thing would easily return it to being the greatest country on earth. I'm not allowed to say what it is and I'd be kicked off Glock Talk if I did. (and no, it has nothing to do with any political assassination).

If it counts as 1 thing, I'd repeal every amendment after the 10th, but that wouldn't be my 1 thing to fix the country.

My fix?

A basic, common knowledge test would have to be passed as a requirement to be able to vote.

I agree with EnemyOfTheState.. this country is so effed-up no way can doing 'one thing' correct the situation.

Not saying those suggestions are not good ones.. most are, but, MAN, what a pickle we are in.

We have too long been satisfied with being spectators..

We had that, prior to the civil rights movement of the 60's, in many states. We fixed it. Turns out, requiring basic, common knowledge is discriminatory.

Just imagine the bump to the economy.
And, we could do that by going to a national sales tax. Then you could dump the IRS as the states already have the people in place collecting it now, which they could do for the federal government and send in. Make it hard to raise it, with super-majorities in both houses. No exemptions, no deductions (because once you grant one, no matter how logical or compassionate, you have opened the door to be right back where we are).

By a floating flat tax I mean a flat tax that can only be raised by Congress to pay for a defined national emergency. The tax increase will have a time limit of 1 year from date of enactment then it expires and will have to be revisited by Congress to keep in place depending on circumstances. No national emergency, no tax increase and the rate defaults to it's lowest setting.

Yep.

And after some time, when we again had the strongest economy imaginable by the modern mind, begin enforcement of Article 1, Section 10.

And live happily ever after.

All the other problems and troubles would eventually take care of themselves.

Yes, eliminate withholding, and make ALL income tax payable, in cash or MO, on the day before Election Day every year.

Re: OP. One thing and one thing only? Simple. I'd require of all politicians and judges a strict Constructionist view of the COTUS informed by the supporting documents authored by the Founding Fathers. This strict Constructionist view of the COTUS would be applied without regard for how it might suit or not suit whoever might be involved regardless of if they were a minority or one of the wingtipped corporate persons.

Reduce government legislature (Senate and House members) to a total of 13 (no party affiliations) and they enact legislation based on citizen approval, not based on their beliefs.

Go back to the first legislator that voted proposed spending funds from the treasury that had no constitutional basis. Sieze all assets of said individual and every legislator that voted for it. Sieze all assets of their decendants and apply it to the debt.

Bren there are a lot of women that would have a major disagreement with you.
