Which packs more punch, the 10mm or the 45acp?

No matter what you get for answer, remember, it all depends on which method of assigning values you believe in.

But, IMO if you consider the average 10mm factory load today (Excluding the Buffalo Bore and Underwoods) I think the velocity advantage of the 10mm versus the diameter and weight of the .45 (in hollowpoint loads for both) makes it a wash.

Those who worship velocity and those who worship weight and diameter will be along shortly to slug it out.

I base my opinion on as an SD round against bipeds. For other purposes (Quadrupeds) I would give a 180 or especially a 200 gn 10mm the advantage based on sectional density.

10mm but I still prefer the 45 ACP. 3 of my 45s are 45 Super capable anyway and I figured out some time back that if I want more power than 45 ACP +P offers I can just get out the 44 magnum or 460 magnum. Of course plenty of people like the full power 10mm niche.

Numbers only, the 10mm. In real life? Either will work for 2 legged predators. I own both and rarely shoot full house 10mm loads. Just no need for punching paper.

I shoot my 1911 in .45ACP a lot more and never feel a want for more power. Get both and then the argument is moot.

The 10mm has more energy behind it but I'll take the larger bullet.

For me, it's the .45 every time.

I will probably never have to make the choice, but if I must I'd probably choose 10mm in a Glock since I'll have the option to convert to .45ACP, .45 Super, .357sig, .40S&W and 9X25 Dillon.

So I can buy a conversion barrel(s) and shoot those different calibers in a Glock 10mm model but not a Glock 45acp model?

You must understand that the 10mm, even in its midpower loadings (Silvertip and Hornady 180 XTP) is too much for the average police officer to handle. By too much I mean recoil and the associated muzzle blast.

I see LEO's on our range have trouble qualifying with a 9mm, and a non +p 9mm at that. This is sad but true. I lobbied hard to get my agency to switch to a .357 Sig, but they wouldn't go for it. I was told the reason being that qualification scores would go down, and shot placement is most important anyway. My personal philosophy is that if you can't handle the tools, then find another line of work. Maybe I am a dinosaur, so who knows.

With the .40 s&w, you get a "downloaded" 10mm bullet with a smaller grip frame, and in a G22 you get 15 plus 1 bullets. This is a very attractive alternative for many police departments.

That having said, there is nothing wrong with a good old .45 ACP. Shoot what you want and enjoy!

A factory 10mm Glock CANNOT be converted to 45 with ONLY a.barrel change; the breech face on the slide would be too small, so the slide would also have to be swapped.

For defensive carry ??? Both have their pros and cons.

For hunting pig, I go 10mm. Not all 10mm pistols or ammo are equal. You have to select your pistol and ammo to match the use.

I could live with a 45 super, though. I don't hunt really big pigs. If you use either for real big pigs ya have to shoot very carefully. If you want to recover your pig. There is little room for error if hunting in heavy cover.

tell you what, i'd hate to get shot with either!!

looking at federal ammo's website, with 180g, the 10mm has muzzle energy of 424 ft-lbs, and the 45 with 185g has 371 ft-lbs. so with similar bullet weights, the 10 has more than 10% more energy. but sure you can find plenty of companies and loads that are hotter or cooler.

If you are relatively new to this I will jump out and say go with .45 ammo should be a little easier to get an a little less expensive. 10mm would afford you a bit wider swing in ammo intensity... As in you can get full house ugly loads that you really won't like shooting on a regular basis or loaded just like a low end .40. But you are going to pay for it. 10mm is not cheep.

10mm all the way: flat trajectory, high energy (with real 10mm loads), big range of bullet weights/energy quotients (which allows you to pick the right ammo for the task from hunting, to sd/hd). Plus, you can pack 15+1 rounds of 10mm rounds in g20 - this is a lot of punch that will take care of any situation, imho.

One downside is ammo cost. However, if you get ammo from Underwood, this becomes a non-issue.

Another downside is recoil. This can be overcome with practice.

The 10mm may be able to pack more punch. But I would not want to shoot a real load from a plastic pistol. The recoil and blast would not be enjoyable.

If one is going to use a more reasonable heavy steel revolver for powerful 10mm loads why not just get it in Colt 45, or a 44 magnum and be able to purchase a full range of store bought 44 spec and 44 mag cartridges?

I don't think the effectiveness of my gonads are determined by the amount of blast and recoil I will accept from a handgun.

10mm recoil is not that bad from a G20. I had one, but now I have a G21sf set up for 45 Super. A 265 WFNGC at 1,000+ fps packs a wallop; 185 @ 1400 fps, 200 @ 1300 fps, and a 230 @ 1200 fps. Or I can just throw the stock barrel and recoil guide rod and spring back in, and shoot 45 auto again. It's really quite versatile.
