when i go to the range i buy what I intend to shoot. so I take 2 boxes from my stash to shoot and replenish it with 2 new boxes for example. I don't gain anything but i keep what i feel comfortable with in the safe.

I hate to say it, but the best way to build a large stock of ammo is to find a source and then have unlimited resources! Just keep buying the stuff until you have "enough"!

This is close to the mark.

The way I did it was to look every few days on line, and, when I found something I could use at a reasonable price, buy it. In a few months I had quite a stash.

Best advice may be just to not pick a time like right now to start building the stash. Wait until the end of the summer, at least, and then start. Right now, you'll just compete against the hysteria that has had all the ammo wiped out for the first half of this year.

It will come back soon. Right now, just keep checking your local spots and buy it a little at a time.

A lot of the people who are complaining about a lack of ammo are the kinds of people who never keep ammo on hand and always run to Walmart before a range session.

I keep a minimum of 1000rnds of ammo per caliber on hand.

Ammo scares and gun runs are cyclical and a given. Buy X amount of ammo per quarter and when it's always on sale. Do not stop until you have at least several thousand rounds per caliber and then replenish what you shoot. You'll never be short of ammo again.

1) Wait for ammo availability and prices to come back down to normal.
2) Buy however much you want to keep on hand.
3) Don't shoot it.

If we are lucky there will be a slight improvement in the next few weeks in ammo supply. However we are primed for a shortage again when the renewed push for Federal bans and restrictions start again.

If we hold the line against the anti gun and the pro gun people that want more restrictions we should see better times in 2015.

So do you stock both pd and range ammo or just pd? For example, I keep a stash of 1000 rounds of HST in both 40 and 45 and buy range ammo as needed.

Buying has slowed down some allowing some ammo to make it to the shelves.

...wanna see zombies worse than people who constantly walk and type in their smart phones? Just look at the countless people who stare into ammo shelves looking for their caliber.

Even if you only shoot 200 rounds a month of each caliber, 1,000 rds won't last very long. Newtown happened 6 months ago. Anyone with 1,000 rounds on hand when this craziness started is probably looking for a score.

*Get it when you see it....shoot it when you know you can get it....replace what you shoot and "add" a box or 2 after you shoot.

Thats the way I do it, a box or two a week in each caliber I am stocking. I seem to be drawn to .223 and .45acp for some reason. I have slowly, but steadily built up a few thousand rounds of each over the years.

I buy ammo just for the range, I rarely dip into my stash for a range trip.

I can only speak to my personal circumstances.

I've quit going to the range the past year or so and concentrated in laying in a supply of range and self-defense ammo. Regular contact with Wal-Mart has resulted in purchases of both 9mm and .22lr.

I had a pretty good supply of JHP self-defense ammo but ran thin of the range ammo. Even though I've accumulated range ammo in the interim I'm also sitting on that until I'm convinced the supply is coming back.

I shoot competitively. Most of the 9mm will be gone in 24 months.
