Here is a document version of ours.

Cop Talk

Ours are gold and there is a banner on the bottom point with our number.

Of course . . . . ours say our rank . . . this one says "Sheriff," but most say "Deputy Sheriff."

Except for my first agency, every one since has gone with the LAPD style Centurion shield. I think most of SoCal has that same shield, made by Sun Badge out of Ontario, CA. The first agency had another design from Sun Badge, shield with a full wreath around it instead of the sunburst cutting the middle.

The only difference with the various agencies is what they put in the middle, with most using some type of relevant building or mountain range with the state seal in the middle.

The only agencies in SoCal not using the Centurion shield are the various sheriffs, LASD has a 6 point star, Orange County has a 7 point star, Riverside County has a 6 point star, and Ventura County has a 7 point star. CHP has a 7 point star. Long Beach PD has a turtle shield. The University of California and California State University cops used to have 7 point stars, not sure about now. I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones I remember.

Ours are pretty much the same thing. 7 point star, silver for grunts, gold for SGT and up.

Wow. I haven't seen a 'Patrolman' badge since 1986 when they were considered to be sexist.

I wish I had mine. Sadly, they were all destroyed.

That's what I thought too! I developed our ID cards and refreshed the badge on the card to reflect "officer" but we still order badges with "patrolman".

I kinda like the old school feel of it. The chief is always supportive so we don't complain about the little things. .

I was talking to some coppers from CA the other day. They were passing trough town on a cross country bike ride. One noticed that my badge said "patrolman" and made the same comment.

Thanks. I wasn't nuts about the "need" to change, but was satisfied with the outcome. The committee came up with options & then the whole department voted for the selection.

If you look close, you can see it incorporated some facets from previous designs we've had.:

When my dog retired it was the right time to find something else to do on a full time basis. I left the SO and now work part time at a small town PD and love life. I get to wear a polo shirt and shorts to work and actually have time to talk with the people on the street rather than run call to call and worry about what admin. thinks.

As for the Mercedes, I do get some grief for it but the PD is not my primary source of income anymore.

Here's a pic of my flat badge. As posted above, it's a typical MI city PD badge:

A few cities use the centurion style shield here but not many. Grosse Ile comes to mind.

I've got 15 years in as a LEO but only 10 in FRS. The PD I work for now pays into FRS as well so I've picked up another 2 years there and will continue to do so.

I've got enough credit to retire but would only get $48 per month since I'm not 55 (they deduct 5% for every year away from 55 until a minimum payment level it hit) .

When I hit 55 years old or 25 years in FRS it will be a nice retirement regardless.

Ah, good that you stayed in FRS; it's a god system;

I've got it set so that my high 5 average will be wayyyy up there with a ton of OT, so I'm gonna retire at 53 at close to 100 % of my base salary....

Good luck in your "retirement " gig, it sounds like fun.

One of the guys who works for me did 30 years in FRS. He retired in 2004 and gets a six figure retirement salary. He makes more in retirement than he does as a pilot.

To get this back on track though -

I worked for two PDs before where I work now. Both of my badges from there say "Patrolman."

Well, if you're gonna be on the Island you gotta show how awesome you are.

I grew up in Wyandotte. We could only look across the water and wish we were BOI.

we don't have badges. Just an ID Card.

Once I had a badge. Back in the old days.
