The question still remains....

If they found anything on a collision course do they have any realistic chance of stopping it? I understand ballistics and physics enough to realize you only need to alter its course a fraction of a percent; but changing the course of billions of tons will take more than a bad Ben Affleck movie.

As for Obama saying his goal is to get a mission ON an asteroid by 2025; what a joke.

Remember when Bush said on 1/14/04 he wanted to return robotic exploration of the moon by 2008 and have a 2nd manned mission to the moon by 2020. Sure, Obama gutted NASA, but was there any real traction on Bush's 2008 goal for the four years he had control of it - nope.

If the MF & TFs couldn't affect them, what makes you think the W.I.S.E. can?

Bumped because after watching some bad tv I'm still wondering.

Does our current state of physics understanding along with space vehicles and military weapons give us a fighting chance to stop a 1-5 mile wide asteroid?

IMO......"stop" (destroy) a 1-5 mile wide solid chunk of nickle-iron ...not likely....

..but divert it just enough to miss the earth..

..depends on how much lead time we are given, how seriously we take the threat & how willing we are collectively to reach way into the hat (resources, nuclear & space assets, ect) to save our collective a $$es!

And retasking of space/ground based hardware & resources may give us the time needed to make a difference!
