45 Super Chrono/Recoil Spring Data G30/G21C

Seems a lot more people have been shooting 45 Super in their Glocks lately and even still more people interested in the cartridge. I have been shooting 45 Super for some years now in my Glocks and have some chrono data to share. The only mods done to my G30 and G21C are upgraded guide rods and recoil springs. I also have a Lone Wolf 6" barrel for the G21C for increased velocity. Your stock Glock barrel will work just fine. These velocity figures are 3 shot averages. Ammo is from Texas Ammo unless otherwise noted.

Recoil spring and guide rod are the only mods. 45 Super runs at 28,000psi, +P is 21,000psi. No buldging at all. To compare, the 10mm runs at 37,500psi I believe.

Yo Turbo.....

I luv those numbers. Its also interesting to see the velocity differential between stock,& 6in. barrel. Ive got an extended KKM barrel,& was always wondering what kind of velocity increase I was getting. Your #s sorta give me an idea. Thanxalot.

I wonder if any of the barrel manufacturers have experimenting with barrel lengths longer than 6" for the G20 and G21. I'm sure that there's a point of diminishing returns, where the nose-heaviness of the barrel would cause cycling problems. My guess is, however, that the .45 Super and hot 10mm's have enough energy to provide cycling with a pretty long barrel. It'd be interesting to see what kind of performance you'd get out of an 8" or 10" barrel.

Thanks, Turbo. I'm thinking of buying a Wolff 21# set and giving 45 super a spin. Do you keep the 21# spring in if you are shooting standard 45 ACP loads? If so, have you experienced any failures due to the heavy recoil spring?

Thanks again.

21lb. spring for everything, including 230gr. ball loads as slow as 700fps. No malfunctions.

Wow, those are some really good increases in FPS over ACP, even over +P ACP.

Does the .45 Super have a following in the self defense or hunting arena? Or is it strictly a play with chambering?

That is pretty amazing that the Glock 21 will function fine with anything from a 17 pound to a 21 pound recoil spring on basically all loads.

As I said before, any Glock other than a 9mm is under-sprung. This is why larger caliber Glocks function fine with heavier springs.

45 Super can be used for self defense, but I really don't see the point. Yes, it is more powerful than 45acp or +P, but it is also harder to control and won't do anything better than +P other than penetrate further. Hunting is another story. I think 45 Super is a fine handgun hunting cartridge within it's (or any handgun cartridge's) limits. My buddy uses it for pig hunting and never has a bad thing to say about it. Matter of fact, he leaves his 44 mags. in the safe.

You will need 45 Super brass. The head stamp will say 45 Super. Do NOT try to load 45acp brass to 45 Super pressures!! Try running a search using "Recoil" as a user name. IIRC, he has done some in-depth handloading for this cartridge and has had excellent results with it. He made factory 45 Super look like standard pressure 45acp.

Yo Turbo,.... didnt U say U were using a 22lb spring for all around usage?
Yo Walter,.... I was wondering the same thing about cycling problems with longer barrels. But then I thought about that carbine conversion with a 16in. barrel. U musta seen it? How does that work?

Yeah, I thought about the carbine conversion. Could be that they're aren't any cycling problems with longer barrels. I'd think that a G20 with a 10" barrel would be a pretty hot hunting pistol.

I get about 950 fps with Corbon 230 +P out of my G36 give or take 30 fps. Looks like it's very comparable to the .45 Super Tactical round.

22lb. in the G21C, 21lb. in the G30.

happyguy,

Cor-Bon claims 950fps from a 5" barrel. I don't have my chrono data in front of me, but IIRC, I got around 900fps from 230gr. +P Cor-Bon. 200gr. +P JHPs run about 990-1000fps from my G30.
