I tested some of my handloaded .45super loads the other day. I posted my findings on the reloading forum, but seeing as how this is .45super specific I shall post them here as well.

Quote:
I am quite pleased with the results. I have 2 different loads I tested (only difference is the bullet and OAL).

These are .45 SUPER loads, DO NOT FIRE THESE OUT OF A STOCK .45ACP GUN. As always, work your way up.

Gun:
Glock 21
KKM 6" hunting barrel (un-ported)
Wolff uncaptured guiderod
Wolff 24# recoil spring

Load 1: (only had 4, ran out of bullets)
230 gr. Rainier FMJ
Fed 150
9.8gr. Power Pistol
1.26" OAL
New Starline .45 Super brass
-results:-
1219
1183
1189
1227
Average: 1205 fps. , 741 ft/lb ME

Load 2:
230gr. Rainier JHP
Fed 150
9.8gr. Power Pistol
1.245" OAL
New Starline .45 Super brass
-results:-
1206
1206
1178
1170
1208
1206
Average: 1195 fps , 729 ft/lb ME

I know I can get more ME with a lighter bullet, but I am trying to get into low .44mag territory with the momentum and that requires a heavier bullet. Besides, if I wanted a 200gr. and lighter bullet, I would shoot 10mm.

On a side note: I also chronoed my target loads. It shoots a 230gr. Rainier FMJ only going 750fps out of a 6" barrel . How is that for versatility? Same bullet, same gun and barrel and 450 fps difference in speed. I did shoot the target load with the 24# spring and it cycled just fine, but the slide returning to battery was more jolting than the recoil, so I switched back to the stock spring for the target loads.
I am loving .45super and it should be noted that this thread is what made me start loading it.

I was looking to get a little more power (whitetail hunting) out of my stock 21 (21# spring / ss rod guide).... but ran into a small problem. Useing Win +p 45 brass, zero 230 hp's and blue dot....I worked up a load starting at 8.5gr to a max of 10gr. At 10gr I got a slight buldge and they chronyed at 950 avg for 10 shots. Brass ejected about 8' or so. At 9.5gr there were no pressure signs.

So I figure an aftermarket barrel and super brass could get me an extra 100fps without any pressure signs. However when I detail striped it I noticed that the locking block pin was bent. That would seem to negate trying to push it any harder (aftermarket barrel / super brass, more powder).

Would a heavier spring reduce the battering on the locking block pin?
I notice that ACE recomends a ported barrel in their super conversion. I was leaning towards a ported 5" barrel if it would take care of the problem.

Thanks

The Glock locking blocks don't bend easily.Usually they crack or break.Inspect yours very well. They can break even with factory loads and some of the newer style ones may be a bit stronger. An aftermarket barrel and 45 Super cases can always help. The 45 +P brass has less capacity unlike 9mm +P cases which are standard capacity. The 45 Super cases have full 45 ACP capacity but are heat treated differently.Adjust spring weight for ejection distance. It sounds like you have a pretty good idea how things should be.

Has 450 SMC hit any manufactures yet?

I still have a few hundred Triton 450SMC rounds and empties but I just picked up a 21 to turn into a dedicated 450 SMC gun.

I plan on adding some heavy ass adjustable sights and maybe a slug or two of Mallory metal to get some more mass to the slide, as the 6" Slide and barrel is out of budget.

I need to do some cheking on if there is a 6" barrel that will work with the factory slide... maybe one with a large compensator...

Any way I forsee my brass hitting the end of it's usefull life real quick now.

Well, I finally received my 6" Glock 21 barrel and 24 pound spring for my 21, and now you're telling me no commercial ammo is available? I do reload for .45 but I'm cautious about high pressures.

This thread has been at the top of the page for nearly 4 years. You need to stop by the Dawg House more often! Don't worry, we don't bite. Unless, of course, we're loaded up with 45 Super.

I'll be taking the G21,.45Super hunting in the next few weeks(Deer,Coyote). Thanks for promoting the Super the way you have Turbonatr. I'm now as big a fan of the "modernized .45acp", as I am the 10mm.

I ordered the Wolff rod and 21# spring for my G30. Other than 45 Super stamped brass do I need anything else? Can I use my 45 ACP dies to load the Super?

ETA: I have a KKM barrel in my G30.

Anyone shot .45Super out of a G21SF yet?

I just picked up Wolff's guide-rod & 24# recoil spring. I'd eventually like turn the 21SF into a decent woods/trail gun with some of the heavier Buffalo Bore loads (230 gr. FMJFN @ 1100 fps (618 ft. lbs.)

The factory G21SF barrel is still sufficient for the .45 Super correct? If I decide to move up to a 6" barrel, who makes stronger drop-in barrels? KKM? Jarvis? Anyone else?

Well, that's why. You have a 4 1/2" barrel versus the stock 3.78" barrel. 70fps velocity spread is a bit more than I have seen from Cor-Bon ammo. That's weird.
Hi
this post brings up a very good point. If you start seeing extreme velocity variation with 45 Super, it's likely your gun needs new springs, and heavy ones. The variation is likely caused by the gun opening early, and this creates the velocity variation. Move to the stiffest springs avaliable, and, never look back...

If I shoot 45super out of my g30 w/wolff springs, what type barrel do I need. No one makes a 6" for g30?

I've shot .45 Super before from a buddy's all steel S&W 945 and thought it was great! It really wasn't much different than shooting .45 ACP +P out of my Glock. With the all steel gun, recoil and muzzle blast were a bit sharper, but still very controllable. I'd like to try some out of my G21 SF.

In my opinion, the .45 Super is what the old, weak .45 ACP should have evolved into, much like the .38 Auto evolved into the much better .38 Super.

What is the best drop-in aftermarket barrel for a G21 SF to handle the .45 Super? KKM? Lonewolf? Does it matter? I don't like ported barrels and I want to keep the stock length.

I would like to shoot .45 super from my G30 and I see posts that say a 21# spring will be enough and I also see posts that say a 24# spring is needed. I have a lasermax laser installed but I will take it out when shooting super as I am sure it may suffer some damage. What is recommended? I would also like to keep the barrel stock if possible.

805 ft/lbs is pretty sick with an 185 grainer. If I could trick my G36 to do this, it may become more than my house gun.
