Possibly going boar hunting in Texas

Yesterday a friend of mine called me up and said he and another buddy may go boar hunting in Texas sometime this coming May and wanted to know if I would come along. I'm not 100% sure I can make it, but I would certainly love to.

Anyway, let me get to my question. What do the resident hunters here at Glock Talk recommend as a good boar caliber? And are there any specific guns you would recommend as well? I am a novice hunter (all I've ever hunted is small game like rabbits and squirrels) and would like to get some opinions from those not as green as I before spending money on this.

Any information would be very helpful. Thanks.

a good handgun and /or rifle shotgun will work. I took cannoncocker on his 1st boar hunt and he nailed 2 good avg size wild boars, even tho the last one gave him quite a fight. ;f

I've taken boars with 357 & 44mag, 12/20ga shotgun and now I primary only use 10mm.
So you have alot of choices and methods, just learn their anatomy and where to place the shot.

Friend of mine uses his 10mm auto or a .44 mag.

Other friend of mine uses his single shot .45-70, a .30-06 or his 12ga.

A 12ga shotgun with slugs or buckshot (if you're close) should be fine. A .30-30 or bigger rifle would do it too.

My second friend's sister went with him once (he lives on 90 acres of forest with a large herd of wild/feral pigs) with a shotgun to back him up, a 300-lb pig came right at her. She accidentally dropped the 870, ripped out her Bersa .380 and hit it five times with Golden Sabers. Good aim, good performance and it died quick. Used to my Bersa, sold it to him, she shot it and never let him have it back. ;f

cool site.

My dad has been running into numerous farmers with hogs problems who pretty much would pay you to come shot them. All in the Central and South Texas region.( San Antonio down to Corpus Christi )

For up to 125 yards, a Marlin 1895G in .45/70.

For anything past that, a .270 Win and up.

I boar hunt in CA and I get following in the jeep:

Marlin 1895G .45/70
S&W 629 6inch barrel .44Mag
Sako Hunter 75 in 7MM rem mag

I have taken Boar with each and all of the above dispatch the little piggies without fail.
