I haven't looked much into this, but why the "invites"? Are you "sponsoring" people?

I could sure use an invite. It would be great for my middle-east travels. Can get to a computer most anywhere.

Prism just hooked me up, but my guess is that Google is giving out "invites" to users as a way for them to get other people hooked up. It is easier to manage from a support/new release standpoint to do this a little at a time instead of just opening the flood gates to every Tom, Dick, and Harry.

unless they have changed something, you are going to need another address for that invite. hotmail was dropping all gmail.com incoming email.

yahoo was sending it to the user's bulk mail folder.

The interface is really nifty, much more like an application than a web page. It doesn't have that "waiting for the web page to load" feel as you click through your emails. Don't knock it until you try it.

The ads are not scattered on the page OR in your inbox. They appear on the side of the screen just like when you do a Google search. It's MUCH less annoying to me than Hotmail's ad system and almost every site you go to nowadays tracs your useage for ads, it's not like this is a new thing. They aren't "reading" your mail. It's just some sort of script that say "hey this dude's got alot of emails with the words 'car' and 'broken' in it. I think I'll show him ads for GM and Ford". Some of you guys are WAY too paranoid.
i received an invite recently from someone at a car forum where i hang out (i have no invites so no request please).

the interface is okay, but there are several things i don't like about it. one is those goofy looking star icons. the other, and i'm sure this will improve, is the lack of preferences on the settings page. there are a few additional options that should be in there.

as far as the adds go, i don't see any reason for them to be scanning the email to target ads. yes, many sites do track usage for ads, but using firefox, i deny those sites the ability to set cookies. gmail doesn't give you that choice. you have to allow the cookies or you can't log in and use it.

bottom line: i don't find gmail so revolutionary as to be the next best thing since sliced bread. my main personal email account will continue to be the one i have with my isp, and my main webmail account will continue to be the one i have with postman.net. no, it doesn't offer a gig of storage, but it has a strict privacy policy, and the administrator is accessible, which is a plus.

my gmail account will probably be relegated to the role of being my spam catcher, or the account that i use when i *have* to provide an email address for some website.

I did test messages to my hotmail and my yahoo accounts from gmail and both went through without a problem.

I still haven't received ANY invites to hand out. :( Had my account for 9 days now. ~500 messages in my inbox and many sent, so I am definately using it, but no invites.

Hey, Im not above begging for an invite....please. Anyone with one to spare, it would be much appreciated. I will, of course, sent any invites I get to GT as repayment.

Since Hotmail seems to be killing it, send to russ (AT) weldonpc (DOT) com.

Thanks guys

Russ

hmm. everyone else i know had 6 or 7 at a time. maybe they just saved them up.

anyway, i got screwed on my two. i was sending one to a friend, the invite window hung up, i exited, and then it said both of my invites had been used.

at least the intended recipient got one of them.

check your SENT mail box, see if it is in there. If it is, you might be able to open it, copy the link, and email/PM the link to someone.
