download speed discrepency. help!
ok. specs first. I'm running an XP Pro box with a 9800Pro vid card and a 3Com 10/100 NIC. I'm running a router (Linksys BEFX41) as a hardware firewall. My Son's PC is the only other pc hooked up to the router. He's running win98SE, GeForce4 Ti4200 vidcard and a Netgear 10/100 NIC.
Here's the problem: When I go do a performance test at toast.net and download the same graphic file from the same location my first 3 runs were:
1910 Kb
1927 Kb
2058 Kb
When I do the same test, same graphic file, same location, my Son's PC does:
520 Kb
538 Kb
543 Kb
??????????
I don't understand, shouldn't he be pulling the same, or similar, download speeds as I am??
When I ping an IP from both PC's we get almost identical pings. I know latency and download speeds are 2 different animals, I just put the ping comment in to show that there weren't any latency issues.
any ideas????

Re: download speed discrepency. help!
I would try messing with the duplex settings for the NIC

AZ-Boog - The default setting for the "TCP Receive Window" in Windows 98 is way too low for broadband.
I would download Dr. TCP from DSL Reports and set "TCP Receive Window" way up.
The default is 8192 or 16384, try it at 32768 or 65536, etc.
This usually makes a dramatic difference for broadband users on Windows 98 (and Windows XP also, IIRC).
Here's some more reading, if you want it: HERE and HERE
Hope this helps !

There's the kinda help I was looking for. Thanks sdakota. I'll give it a try.
Is there a way to set this in win98 without resorting to a third party utility?????

i don't know for sure, but..
changing the value of DefaultRcvWindow
setting decribed at http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;158474
might do it.

Yes, if you are comfortable editing the registry.
First, back up the registry.
Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP]
and create/alter a key named "DefaultRcvWindow" with a value of "65535", or whatever value you want to try.
That should do it.
Best of luck !
PS> I got this info from http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/
I don't know why they use 65535 instead of 65536.

Because 2 ^ 16 = 65536, but you have to count zero too.
