The montage suffers from a "can you read my mind" syndrome that many creators have. You can't expect to show a tense face and have someone guess what was in that person's mind. You need to show what led that person to such a state of mind -- you need to turn the camera around. I recommend reading a lot of haiku. It concentrates on conveying an emotion through imagery. It should be most relevant to what you're trying to do.
